I have to call BS on this. First of all let me get my biases out in the open. It's no secret that I DETEST WITH A PASSION upscaled PAL or NTSC video. It doesn't improve the picture. It doesn't create more detail. It just blows up an image and makes things blurrier. That's all. It's a gimmick that makes files huge for no good reason and confuses videophiles like me who download something that's supposedly HD only to find it's just upscaled NTSC because the poster either didn't know it was upscaled or forgot to include that detail. That's not so much an issue here on VEF where everyone's pretty meticulous about including details like that but it's a big problem just about everywhere else. For me there's one reason and one reason only for upscaling...to play it on your HD TV. I will take NTSC and blow it up to 720P in Premiere Pro if I plan on viewing it only on an HD TV because everyone knows HD TVs don't play 480i video nearly as well as if you take a 480i video and blow it up to 720p. However, I'd never take 480i and blow it up to 1080p. That's stupid because it's just a waste of bytes. An HD TV isn't going to display a difference between 720p'd upscaled NTSC video and 1080p'd upscaled NTSC video so why eat up your hard drive unnecessarily? But other than that one caveat, my view on upscaling is it's a waste. Now, having gotten my full disclosure out of the way... Comparisons like the above are fundamentally flawed. You're doing a comparison on a close-up shot which means you have more detail to work with in the PAL image to begin with so the upscale isn't going to look significantly worse (though *I* saw the parts of the image where the upscale exposed its shortcomings...particularly in her irises, eyebrows and individual hairs) Try a fair comparison and use a non-close up shot. Then you'll see that the upscale just made the image bigger and blurrier. |

As an experiment, I’ve fully screen capped a bunch of Karen scenes, resulting in thousand of caps. Any interest in me sharing them here ? An edited selection of course, with eventual links to the full sets for interested people.
