I fucking hate jazz . I once got a lift from a guy who put on a John Coltrane CD in his car - sounded like there was a nest of wasps in the boot.

Charlie Mingus.
Coltrane
Monk Thelonius

Still got their vinyls, which I cherish but rarely play... I do play the copies I made to cassette and then CD. Vinyl is sacred

Funnily enough, 'Yardbird' (Charlie P) i never really was into, before my interests I suppose.

But same as I felt about Guthrie, that took Dylan to make me realise his importance and truth..... it took Coltrane for me to do a mea culpa on Parker.

You can miss so much

As a jazz fanatic, I've always found anti-jazz comments to be amusing. Many jazz fans react hysterically as if jazz was their sacred cow. You either love it or hate it. There's no in between. I often make similar comments about rock music. 90% of rock is 08/15 garbage but I still listen to some of the good stuff.

I'm not sure if jazz is the soundtrack of erotica nor am I familiar with what some people refer to as Playboy jazz. Perhaps they mean cool jazz, the kind that Chet Baker used to play. For me this is the most boring kind of jazz.

When I was at Art School the more timid (usually middle-class girls) who thought it was a 'finishing-school' referenced Miles Davis as their FAVE jazzman....

Same era as Clapton, Davies, Mercury, Townsend,Richards, Jones and Bowie were dealing elsewhere....

Davis was 'mainstream' by then.. the fact that he had no lyrics made him 'jazz' to at least 2 of them who have pretty big careers in media now. There may be others, but these 2 ex-familia are big voices in UK media these days.

AND... they thought MIles Davis was Jazz.... Gordon Bennett

That's the thing though, jazz has got a lot of different areas and types so those who instantly scream out 'I HATE JAZZ' actually probably do like some songs who if you pointed out they were a form of jazz they wouldn't even know

It's the same with any genre probably, I'm sure there's a lot of Keith Urban, etc fans out there who wouldn't dream of listening to those who got country music off the ground as that sound is too far removed from what they like listening to

My Dad also used to play Glenn Miller so I got used to that but some jazz is so bad it hurts your ears because the instrument is pushed beyond its capabilities-take trumpeter William 'Cat' Anderson, he plays so high on Duke Ellington's stuff it could make your ears burst but it is discordant not melodious and I would also put Louis Armstrong in there too(why do you have to make your instrument screech?) most jazz writers talk a load of crap anyway but mainly because they enjoyed it, discovered in their youth when jazz was more widespread. There is a difference between big band, trad, dixieland then the contemporary and other styles - some of which are so bad you wonder just how they conned the record company into signing them. I still hate jazz but I will use it in combination with sexy clips I post - perhaps someone will have a wank to it - rhythm method baby!

Most of what I listen to now is jazz.

I loved it ever since I was a teen but now it’s my soundtrack.

Just been listening the Modern Jazz Quartet at the Monterey Jazz Festival 1963.

Check it out!!

I love most jazz. I prefer the more modern-sounding stuff. Don't care much for Dixieland or ragtime. I love Bebop, fusion, and a lot of other stuff, from Bud Powell to Keith Jarrett, from Parker to Wayne Shorter, etc. I love Miles. I saw his electric band, with Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea on keyboards, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, Airto on percussion, and a variety of sax players. This is my favorite piece, from "Bitches Brew." To me this is very erotic.
