Not sure this has been asked before but why do add 101 to various subjects especially referring to school or college etc as in Phys Ed 101?

The Open University over here does the same A101 and S101 was the first level degree course for Arts and Science when I was studying in a similar way to as these present courses

http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergr...ourse/u101.htm
http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergr...ourse/e101.htm

I passed the A101 the Arts Foundation course in 1985 but had to pull out of Science the following year.

Because classes that have the 101 numerical suffix attached denote a class that is counted as part of the grade point average (GPA). Classes that have a numerical suffix that is lower than 101 do not count as part of the GPA and do not count towards college credit hours.

For instance, a class for developmental writing might be called Writing Skills Review 095 while an English composition class might be called Composition 101.

Classes with 101 numerical suffix are the first level of college-grade classes and count towards the GPA and towards accredited hours needed for graduation to earn a diploma or a certificate.

Thanks all. I'd have checked but I am not superhuman enough to go through 62 pages, and the Search facilities here are not always accurate enough to find reference points.

It might vary from university to university, but we had no 101s. We had something similar like 1301. The first numeral being the level of the course. 1 being freshman, 2 sophomore, 3 junior, 4 senior, 5 master, 6 doctorate. The second digit reflected how many hours the class counted. 3 was for 3 hours, 4 for 4 hours, etc. the last two digits where the course description in the catalogue. 01 typically referred to as the first survey course. But that varied from department to department. In reality there was almost no rhyme or reason or accurate way to predict the difficulty in the 3000 and 4000 level courses.

I'm certain it widely varied from place to place.

Sometimes if a class had a lab, and if it was graded separately, it would have a corresponding course number to the lecture portion. Example. Intro Biology 1301 had a separate lab that was BIOL 1101. While the non science major intro biology was BIOL 1449 and the lab was factored into one overall grade.

I've never been to Great Falls so I can't really say much about it. I'm kind of surprised that area is just prairie though.

Oh well, you just wound up in the wrong area of Montana. Probably didn't make it south and west enough. If you ever get a chance again there's an interstate (its either 90 or 94 which goes east/west throughout the state. Really nice drive with lots of areas to explore. I'd go back there anytime.

I guess I should say that if you're looking for nightlife (bars, etc.) Montana is probably not the best place for that (stay away from Utah also, thats the only place I've ever run into 3.2 Heineken, it was terrible), Bilings or the college towns might have something but it would be really limited. Their colleges are really small.

Hell, come to Wisconsin. We have an idiot governor but great beer and lots of it. What more could you want?

Great Falls Montana has the most affordable homes in the USA apparently. In the UK, cheap houses are usually a warning sign that no one wants to live there.

Well, Montana is one of the most sparsely populated parts of the US. Here that tends to drive home prices way down due to lack of demand.

BTW, that roadside Texas strip search we were discussing earlier? The officer has been suspended and the two women who were pulled over have filed a lawsuit against the officer and the department.
