I have never enabled automatic updates since Windows 3.

And after a lot of messing around, I have my Win3 desktop.

I'm on 8.1 but it can be done!

Although I run Windows 10 on a new machine, my main desktop - the one I'm using at the moment, runs 64 bit Windows 7. I'm going to make the move up to Windows 10 on this machine soon for improved security and to start using an SSD and a 3T hard drive. As Win 10 will be a complete new installation, I plan to be a bit more careful about the software I install. For example, MS Office will be replaced with Libre, although I will stay with Avast. That aside, I think I'm going to revert to Pale Moon in preference to Firefox. I am currently running Firefox 63, but have found it a bit lumpy at times. Tried Opera, which is not bad, but really not quite as slick as Firefox. I don't know what it is about Firefox, but one release seems okay and the next is not so good. Maybe it's just me?

I have found Palemoon has got a lot slower recently, in particular with VEF where it can sometimes hang for 10s+ between clicking a topic and the page flipping over.

I'm experimenting with Waterfox which is based on a much later version of Firefox than Palemoon and liking it so far, but I'm no techy.

I've also found that the old ScrapBook add-on that runs on Waterfox (still overall runs well with VEF) does not get along with any VEF content anymore. I have had to move to DownThemAll, another old Waterfox-compatible add-on, requiring that every image be loaded in its own tab (something that Scrapbook didn't require). However, DTA doesn't usually work with Pimp and Host images (based on some of the posts I've read, it's an issue with their web page coding, not surprisingly).

For embedded videos, the old version of the Video Download Helper is still working with Waterfox, but not flawlessly. If you using Quantum FF, the newer version of VDH, installed along side the OS-specific version of the companion app, while with minimal settings & a lot of fiddling with the few settings it has, is the most reliable method of downloading embedded videos I've found, even grabbing those obnoxious "blocked" YouTube videos. Like the best video downloaders, it simulates the playing of the video in the browser, forcing the host to stream the hard-to-download videos in the small chunks, and then putting the chunks back together at the end, to give you a usable video file.

Not sure if this is still the right thread for Firefox issues, but I'm wondering if anyone else is having the string of problems I am with 64 bit Firefox 70?

In the last couple of days since the update, I've had pages not opening, webmail acting strangely, videos failing to play (YouTube is okay) and some running without sound. Earlier, I couldn't get onto a UK tabloid site and then everything locked up.

I have been fiddling about with the strange new browser settings, but not having any luck. If this carries on, I'll have to try and find an older release of Firefox, or see if the latest 64 bit Pale Moon can replace it.

Any suggestions?

What do you mean by pages not opening? Like you'll click on a link to open in a new tab and it won't open so you have to reopen the tab again? That's been happening to me.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've already looked at some of the Firefox support and found it a bit unhelpful, but I will carry on for a while. Nevertheless, I really don't need all this hassle and will drop Firefox if I can't get a grip on this. I suspect it's connected to all the new features on the 70 release. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

LiamA: Pages not opening sometimes - simple as that. And today, I couldn't open a movie trailer video on IMDb. Very annoying as I've not had this many problems in one go for some time.

I just visited imdb with FF70 (still with no add-ons) - streaming vid played - link was https -

Expanse trailer 1.46min
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3230854/

so no mixed content http blocking thats seems to be a reason for some videos not playing

Mixed content blocking in Firefox - how to unblock if you really want access

Install an older version of Firefox

Downgrade alternatives

Thats just leaves a plethora of other possible conflicts like security suites etc

Still not sure what's going on, but at the moment, the last thing I need is to start trying to fix a series of really annoying, very elusive problems that seem directly linked to the last Firefox update. Unfortunately, the latest has been Firefox blocking access to my bank account and I've had to move over to Chrome for access which I'd rather not.

It could be a conflict with an add-on or something else, but my next move has to be a quick fix like replacing FF70 with FF69+ (and stopping auto updates) or the latest Pale Moon as this situation is now really causing me trouble.
