Zidane has resigned.

If we all get together and pray in the general direction of madrid will they appoint Wenger?

The betting markets suggest that he's a real contender. Poch is clear favourite, but as he's just signed a fresh 5-year contract, Spurs will negotiate a huge dollop of compensation. There are rumours though that there's a caveat in the contract if RM come knocking.

Conte and Wenger are duelling it out for second-favourite. Wenger has been in RM's sights for many years, but I really can't see Conte as RM material - he's far too outspoken.

Meanwhile where does Zidane pitch up - presumably he may be on Juve's radar should they find themselves in need?

Silva finally joins Everton - the supporters and club finally get their man. Whether they will see it as such a positive move come Christmas might be interesting. They look like a club with plenty of decent players, a plethora of promising youngsters, but no team.

You have to question the due diligence done when appointing players who have never managed before.

The record of talented English players who went on to be successful managers
Cant think of many in the past 30 years ... kevin keegan in the 90s

football's most successful players-turned-coaches? 20-1

Go back further and it becomes interesting: The Charlton brothers are an excellent case in point. Big Jack took his coaching badges whilst still on the playing staff at Leeds and himself was playing under one of the prime examples of a successful player turned Manager. Jack had a very respectable club management career before performing minor miracles with Ireland, by getting his players to play to their strengths and exploiting the dislike of international defenders to being turned by having the ball played in behind them. He kept it simple and played to players limitations.

Bobby Charlton didn't succeed; he was never the outspoken man his brother was, failed to connect with his players and struggled with their limitations, which he himself had never experienced as a player.

Of the successes, you can look at Brian Clough and Alf Ramsey himself. Howard Kendall did well although his personal demons took him in the end. I'm always wary of the likes of a star player being heralded as a manager until they have built their own team. Dalglish walked into one of the best teams in Europe. Success wasn't inevitable, but it was more likely than failure. He notably had far less success elsewhere though.

The appointment of ex players like Lampard must be a slap in the face for ambitious managers lower down the leagues. Maybe the road is too long, and you have to be a Martin O'Neill or Chris Houghton and be willing to put in the long hard hours and rainy Tuesday nights in Rotherham to really test your management skills.

Creative and skilful players really don't seem to evolve into good managers. Managers need to have a thorough understanding of positioning and team structure, and that means that central defenders tend to do best when they move into management.

both of these were pretty good players . Not many I can think of that weren't players of high standard ( Jose excepted). Perhaps we don't recognize them as such. Even Poch was Argentine international...but think of Zidane, Conte, Pep...
I agree though, being an exceptional player has it's demons and most do not become good managers, eg Maradona, Pele, Best...

Meanwhile in a Parisian side street, the Rue De Gullit, a drunken Pastis and Absinthe -fuelled disturbance erupts as Wenger and Zidane fall out of a canal side Guingette, fighting to determine who will be the next manager at Elland Road.

Was it Warhol who said :
"In the future, everyone will be Leeds manager for 15 minutes"
