Yes, and I understand why. I'm not sure if he's ever done a novel in any other setting--but admittedly I have only read only about a half dozen of his novels. It would be interesting to see if he could write a novel from Arizona or Texas or even Iowa.

"Have these divisions always happened or is there a sudden ideological battle going on?"

There has always been a division between the right and left. Only recently however, has the left become totally unhinged in regard to their sanctuary cities. I guess that would be a natural when illegal aliens kill people and the left tries to harbor them from punishment or deportment. No doubt a lot of the resistance is against President Trump who wants to rid the country of criminals. The poll number I've seen suggest that some 70% of Californians are against sanctuary cities. Well, we can wait to see the results of mid-term elections. If the likes of Gov. Jerry Brown and other pro-sanctuary city governors and mayors continue to be elected then those alleged 70% are just pissing in the wind. Either that, or a lot of Californians are giving up on their own personal California Dreaming adventure and moving to other states like Utah and Texas.

Santee Fats' reply brought to mind that Dashiell Hammet based his stories in San Francisco, Philip Marlowe in Los Angeles, Ross McDonald in the Southern California suburbs, John D. McDonald often in Florida, and Rex Stout in New York City.

I am not a big fan off the sanctuary civil resistance. One might also make the argument that only recently has the right become totally unhinged in regards to immigration. There is a lot of disinformation being broadcast. Reason magazine is the official organ of the Libertarian party, hardly the "fake news liberal media." Here is what they report.

The terms for "soft drink" varies in the States, depending on where you are geographically. "Soda" is the term derived from the sodium in the beverage for carbonation. Another term used here is "pop." I heard it being called a "fizzy" in other countries.

I would be interested to know what form of sodium is used to 'carbonate' the beverages as IIRC the term carbonation itself derives from the Carbon Dioxide gas (CO2) used to create the bubbles. This gas is tasteless whereas any sodium I would have thought would taint the drink.

Here ya go.
The fizz that bubbles up when you crack open a can of soda is carbon dioxide gas (CO2). Soft drink manufacturers add this tingling froth by forcing carbon dioxide and water into your soda at high pressures—up to 1,200 pounds per square inch.

Excuse me quoting myself, although my posts are usually fascinating.

I've just seen that California has appointed an illegal immigrant to a State Office post. Maybe the Californian authorities are openly challenging the Government. Would the population of California strongly agree with this action or are Californian authorities on dangerous ground these days.
