Harold, I dare say that we unfortunately missed the memo on that one; squiggsy must be withholding information on activities that only the learned few must know about. Elsie seems to be doing very well in Scotland at present. The people seem to love her and they are turning out in large numbers to see her. Even in the rain.

She may even be called a " tourist attraction"!! Or a "tourist attractor".

The UK actually makes a profit from the Royal Family, a big profit.

Firstly, the Royal Family owns a large amount of agricultural land and other assets and investments. This is known as the Crown Estates. Each year the profit/income earned from the Crown Estates is paid entirely to the Government.

In an average year the Crown Estates earn around £200 Million. The amount the Taxpayer gives to the Royal Family is £10 Million. So the UK makes a profit of £190 Million.

If the UK became a Republic, the income from the Crown Estates would be lost. So each taxpayer would be around £3.20 per year worse off before the costs of any President were added on.

Then you add-in the £7000 Million which is earned by foreign visitors (mainly Americans) visiting the Royal Palaces and anything Royal in the UK.

Also, if you were a foreign head-of-state (such as the President of the USA) what would you rather do ?

A - Drink a cup of lukewarm tea with President Hattersley in a converted Council House.

Or

B - Attend a banquet with the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

I think that most would choose B.
