Trouble with the WACA is the time of year for the test. That pitch hasn't had most of the summer to bake itself. They need to go back to how the pitches were 20 years ago, if they can. They all use drop in pitches now.

It's not illegal to 'doctor' your own pitches. All home teams have done it. England have produced seaming pitches for decades to suit their seam bowlers. During the 80s the West Indies would produce rock hard concrete-like pitches that gave bounce to suit their quartet of fast bowlers.

Is not the sub continent the land of spin?
We have no spinners of note and an 18 year old has made ours look like infants, batting last in India will not been a pleasant experience. Records indicate we have the best tail in the world, unfortunately today it was involved in a major disaster. Last edited by victor meldrew; October 30th, 2016 at 01:29 PM.. |

I only tuned in for the evening session and expected a normal session but watched Le Sang des Betes. In fairness, Bangladesh have a remarkable new bowler in Mehedi Hasan and he was the match winner, no question. His team backed him up manfully with some very good catching and he showed a really good temprement, not fazed by missing a very difficult caught and bowled against Ben Stokes and not fazed when Stokes hit him for a straight six shortly afterwards and made clear his intent to hit him out of the attack. It was classic right arm orthodox offspin, nothing mysterious or fancy, but exactly what you see in most weekend league cricket games; but done immaculately and with a lot of thought and tactical guile.
England did not throw it away. They were got out by really excellent execution of regulation spin bowling on a turning pitch. This used to happen to good sides a lot in the twenties, thirties and forties, when pitches were uncovered and turned sharply as they dried off after the rain.

IIRC it was Shakib who dropped the c&b from Ben Stokes, not Mehedi.

I expect BT to throw serious money at it, not sure what Sky will do as reports indicate falling viewing figures. |

Once again a series ends with more questions than answers.
England can, IMO, count themselves fortunate that they won the ODI's 2:1 when they could have lost all three. Equally, and had it not been for Stokes, the 1st test would have been lost and a 2:0 loss there. Surely the thought in going to Bangla was to give both the batsmen and bowlers some experience on 'turners'. Hardly needed a crystal ball to tell that the batsmen would, overall, struggle. And if spinners can not take wickets on 'turners' then they qualify under the 'unfit for purpose' category. It seems that any result in India that is not 5:0 will be a 'success'. |
