Exactly what the judge gave them - nor did I suggest otherwise.
The crime was indeed appalling, and the boys were justly punished for it. But the crowd wants something more. They beat their fists upon the van that carried the boys to and from court, baying for vengeance. It seems the fists are still clenched, even today, and the desire for blood unquenched. The fact that many of the general public would have them banged up forever for something they did when they were 10 perhaps indicates that it's not just the law that's an ass. |

I was trying to remember the other kids' name Robert Thompson and it was equally shocking because as stated earlier they were both young themselves. The papers were screaming that they had been watching video nasties like Child's Play ( a demonic doll that goes around killing people but made to look like a child)-What sort of parent allows that sort of thing to be left in a house where young kids can access these things(remembering that most kids can operate a video recorder better than their parents-even back then) Do you blame them? Do you blame society as a whole for being more dangerous or do you blame the children for copying something they saw in a film- didn't we all try to fly like Superman tying a towel around your neck as a cape, or be like Batman and do up your top coat button or popper to act like his cape or indeed ape those silly slow-motion moves that the Six Million Dollar Man did on television?
Either way children will copy things and act out things they've seen or heard-its how they make sense of the world but sometimes this can have a devastating outcome. And lets not forget just last year about those two brothers that tortured another by tying him to a tree. That and this incident are a good indication that children aren't the little rapscallions they used to be-but thankfully it is only a small minority that go on to kill whilst the vast majority of children are normal, healthy, boisterous young so & so's-but then weren't we all?.

Gentlemen, I have been following this 'debate' on here regarding the Jamie Bulger case with trepidition.
This is a very emotive subject, they were all children concerned so lets please be careful with what is said. tabs.

I wonder if we are missing a point? Venables has committed a breach of his license terms, we do not know what this was, and now he is not only ''back inside'', but inside an adult prison. How long he will serve there is a decision for a parole board but will certainly be longer than he would have got from a judge or a magistrate, because he is already a ''lifer'', resuming his indeterminate sentence for murder. When you receive a life or an indeterminate sentence you are only ever released on license and will go back for even a relatively minor offence. The sentences on Venables and Thompson were not at all as lenient and soft as the media represented at the time.
The Bulger murder was an event of rare horror, thankfully so rare that it can still shock and disgust British public opinion, because we are not used to this sort of depravity. Please God we never do get used to it. However in order to handle this discussion and not lose control of ourselves, we really need to rely on our own reason and judgement and not on our natural and visceral reaction to the crime and its perpetrators. This discussion will nosedive as soon as we forget this.

I put an old car battery and a buggered starter motor in my bin which is intended for for garden refuse last summer.
I covered them up with grass and hedge cuttings and the binmen emptied it no problem - I'd like to see what sort of compost they made out of that! |

I noticed that the Brit Pound exchange rate with the Oz dollar is 60c. Got told it hasn't been that bad for 40years and I was also told with that exchange rate a pint of beer costs $8.50Aust?
