Britain is trapped regardless of Brexit vote according to Yannis Varoufakis. Whatever you think of him he is one man who go to know the EU negotiators very well indeed.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-03-16/britain-in-hotel-california-just-like-greece-varoufakis-says

The U.K. "can’t really leave’’ the European Union and the country wants to remain part of the EU single market even if it votes in favor of "Brexit" in June, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis said.

He said the U.K. wants to be part of the single market, which he said includes free trade, common industry standards, common labor protection rules and common environmental standards.

"To do that, you need to have common sovereignty of the executive, judiciary and law-making," according to Varoufakis.

"Whatever our criticism might be of the European Union, we are under the spell of the ‘Hotel California’ dictum: you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

The only way you can really escape is by demolishing the Hotel.

There's one thing that really has amazed me more then anything about this referendum, and that is just how much has CHANGED in such a profoundly short period of time!

After the results were declared, what did the whole world see?

* The Prime Minister of Great Britain resigning.
* The leader of the opposition (Corbyn) facing a leadership challenge from his party.
* The international stock market going through turmoil, especially for the value of the pound.
* Both Northern Ireland and the Scottish government reconsidering a vote for independence.
* President Juncker and the rest of Brussels demanding that procedures for leaving should begin ASAP.
* France, the Netherlands and (I think) Sweden are also convening their governments because the risk of a Leave referendum might occur in their countries too.
* And lastly, people have already started a partition asking for a new referendum, and that London should be classed has a independent state (or something like that).

But the thing is, Ladies and Gentlemen, is what amazes me the most about all this is this:

All this has occurred in just. ONE.SINGLE.DAY!

ALL that has happened literally within just 24 HOURS!

I know they say 24 hours is a lifetime in politics, but to me what's happened so far in one day is just incredible.

In fact, I was watching the late night news last night, where they went through all the events of the day.
And has I was watching it I couldn't believe that everything started that very morning. So much had happened throughout the world it genuinely felt like AGES ago, not just hours.

Still feels slightly strange to me thinking about some much happening in just one day.

It will pass, and be replaced by another less pleasant one in the very near future when you realise that none of the Leave campaigner's promises ever held any water (e.g. no Ł350 million for the NHS, no drop in rates of immigration etc) and the economy slumps back into recession...

Of course, when it does, you won't find me gloating - bawling "ha ha, told you so" - because we'll all be suffering.

"Your side lost" - give me a break from football terrace triumphalism and taunts and raise the game.
Not gloating at all, it's just a response to the constant litany of doom and gloom still being spouted all over including here after the referendum. Yes I am happy that Leave won but if we had lost then as I would do at general elections if the party I choose loses I shrug and get on with my life, whining won't change anything. Interestingly I have a lot more respect for Angela Merkel in the aftermath of the vote
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/...-Angela-Merkel

Very few political party pledges actually hold water. One that did was Cameron's referendum plegde which he kept and this is the result.

"structuring things" better or worse does not necessarily depend on which nationality you are from.

Besides the fact that this particular referendum should never have happened due to the mentioned backgrounds and strategies in the Tory-Fraction (thanks Scoundrel for your precise description ), there is strong evidence that in whatever referendum is held, the likeliness of other (non-topic) issues being mingled therein is high and therefore the result of the poll does not necessarily reflect the true picture.

That´s why I am totally against referendums for the a.m. reasons.

Whenever you feel unhappy with the policy of the government, you have the chance to correct things on next general elections.

Most probably, Mr. Cameron would not have been elected PM again if he hadn´t brought this stupid referendum into play.

It´s a shame that his first strategical attempt succeeded and was re-elected, but he got his personal bill now as having failed.

But the biggest desaster IMHO is that the young people who -with a vast majority voted for remain- are now bitten and see their chances of self-realization dramatically lowered because their homecountry (namely the elder people and lesser-educated) has now decided to "get control again".

These young people who have a long-term future ahead give a sh*t on control, they wanna be part of a global infrastructure without (mental) borders.

On a side note and speaking as a German, I really don´t get it why this control-argument has been pushed soo heavily. Even though my homecountry is member of the EU, I never had this feeling that I am controlled by Brussels or that the current government is not controlling what´s going on in my country. It´s the entire line-up of governments who form what the EU should look like.

But, perhaps one need indeed to be a citizen of Britain to have this particular approach or sense of what "control" is
.

If one of the outcomes of this referendum was that Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Mini will perhaps become true "british" cars again under own British Ownership and Management, then I would feel tremendously glad. On more, while all of the current staff and working-people can keep their jobs.

A Bentley with a VW-engine (W12, Audi V8), a Rolls-Royce (V12) and Mini (Inline3) with BMW-engines...

That really shatters me...

Bah

My prediction:

UK Helds new referendum voting
UK stays in EU
Scotland will remain part of Great Britain!
Happy end!

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that she would fight to keep Scotland in the EU and its single market in order to respect the wishes of the public.

But she does not respect the wishes of the public in regards their referendum two years ago?

This woman will have you voting till she gets her own way, with no respect of the wishes of the people of Scotland. I hope the people of Scotland remain part of the UK, but I will respect your decision if you want to leave.

And I am sure the EU will welcome your money too...the fat cats have to be fed

It's a nice thought, but It wont happen.
And if it did, can you imagine the uproar from the muh inglund brigade after being cheated out of their "victory"?
Best case scenario now would be for the Scots to take their second referendum and secede from the UK. (I am pretty much convinced that will happen anyway) Then (this is more in the realms of wishful thinking) The Scots and the Northern Irish could form their own union free from the control of Westminster and the little Englanders.

Hehehe!

That time the "fear campaign" worked. But will it work a second time, now we know how wrong it can go?

The situation is different now
