My parents woke me up in the middle of the night for the first moon landing. Just became 5 and should not miss this historical event. But you know, when you're young you take things for granted. Looking back all I remember are the vague images on the black and white TV, and the idea I witnessed this historical moment.
Elvis, no particular moment, but yes I remember his passing. John Lennon, I remember that, being wakened in the morning and got the message that Lennon was shot, it was unbelievable. Berlin Wall, no surprise, I was in touch with East Berlin people who said to me, the wall will come down. 9-11, it was on the radio news that a plane had hit the World Trade Centre and I immediately knew this was no ordinary accident and something was wrong. I turned on the TV, switched to CNN and put a tape in my VCR. When I saw the first images I phoned my dad and said, this is no accident, this is serious. I still have that tape, what strikes me most is when the first tower collapses and hardened CNN reporters who've seen it all are talking about a major explosion in the building. They just could not believe what they were seeing.

I remember when Churchill died - my father, who had been a Red Clydesider in his youth, said "Good riddance to the old bastard - not before f*cking time!!"

One I particularly remember was the death of Ayrton Senna.
I didn't have a TV at the time so used to go round to a friend's house to watch the Grand Prix. About half an hour before the start of the race, my friend's wife suddenly decided that she wanted to go out for the afternoon as it was such a nice day, and my long-suffering friend had no option but to go along! I stayed to watch the GP, and after the crash I remained glued to the TV, waiting for news. When it was finally announced that Senna had died, I went outside and sat in the garden. I didn't take a book or a magazine ... I just sat there and stared into space. I was still sitting in the garden when my friend got back, and he must have seen something in my face as his first words were "Don't tell me someone else has died?" (Roland Ratzenberger having been killed in qualifying the previous day). I just nodded and said "Senna". I can still remember the disbelief in my friend's voice as he said "No ... not Senna!" Another very vivid memory I have is of getting home from work one day to find my girlfriend sitting cross-legged on the lounge floor, staring at the TV screen on which was an image of something that, to me, looked like a close-up of a microscopic sea creature or a wierd crystal structure. It was, of course, footage of the Challenger disaster on the evening news. However, it just seemed so unreal. Even when I watch the film now, knowing what's going to happen, the explosion still comes as a shock, and this particular image is burned into my memory. |

I can remember Kennedy's death.
I was seven and we had settled down to watch Friday night TV. Double Your Money and then Take Your Pick. The TV announced that JFK had been shot and then just before Take Your Pick said that he had died. They then played suitable music and broadcast a photo of a bowl of flowers. I was annoyed that I was missing my favourite programme but my parents were very upset. We were British and had still to find out what sort of people the Kennedeys really were. It came quite hard because we really believed in them. |

"The Explosion" - that brings memories from 50 years ago I'm sure I heard or at least felt the 50-MT H-bomb explosion in 1961. Friends (and my mother) thought I was nuts, but today I know that shock waves from the explosion went three times around the world, so I think they were wrong Where I was? - at home, of course |

I was with my sisters in a hotel outside of Washington when Diana died. We were watching TV and there were constant bulletins about Princess Di being in an accident. When it was reported that Buckingham Palace had no comment, my one sister said, "She's dead. They're figuring out what to say."

I was at home asleep when my older sister woke me up with a phone call informing me that John Lennon had just been shot. I was in high school and was a big fan of Beatles' music as I still am (a fan not in high school). I got up and watched the coverage and was very saddened like many were.

I'll never forget that too, and still get emotional about it.
