The Bride (2017)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6095090/

I cannot remember having seen any Russian horror movies prior to this, a few science fiction films definitely but this was pretty good.

The film opens in the 1920's when a man distraught over losing his wife turns to the supernatural to bring her back, however, it involves a local peasant girl having to be sacrificed

Back to the present and newly weds college student Nastya and fiance Ivan, Ivan gets a phone call and had to visit his family, he tried to persuade Nastya not to come but ... well, women .... you know

When they get to the family home she soon finds they have a sinister past and strange passage ways throughout the house, when Ivan appears to go missing the next morning Nastya soon realises she should have stayed at home.

Things to learn here, if someone tells you to break something to stop the evil just do it straight away, don't fanny around waiting for a cue

Looks like a US remake is coming

Default Pearl Harbor [sic] (2001) and Dr Crippen (1963)

Re Pearl Harbor [sic] I really can't top this user review I found on IMDB

I'm only 2 and a half years old and I love complicated movies like this. I just wish it had more special effects and more basic dialogue. ~ Bubba.

On a slightly more interesting note I caught the last 20 minutes of a film I didn't know existed this morning. It was Dr Crippen (1963) - an early outing from the excellent filmaker Nicholas Roeg, with Donald Pleasance as Dr Crippen and a rather fetching Samantha Eggar playing his mistress and co-accused, Ethel Le Neve.

The bit I saw started with the jury bringing in their verdict and covered Miss Le Neve breaking down in the prisoner bar when she is acquitted but her lover is convicted, forlornly wailing that he is also innocent. She only gets one more scene but it is a rather striking one, at the bitter end.

The rest of the film covers 7.30am through to about 7.50am in the condemned cell, just before the 8 am denouement. Pleasance has a very nice line in cold hearted and cool villains; but his portrayal of Dr Crippen is a lot different and very interesting. Crippen is tense and visibly afraid, but shows huge courage and dignity, quietly thanking the warders for their kindness to the condemned man. The governor presents him with a telegram from Ethel Le Neve who simply expresses her prayer for his safekeeping in the next dimension - but he didn't have to, since Ms Le Neve is not officially related to Dr Crippen.

Crippen is grateful to the governor and asks him to pass on some final words to Ms Le Neve, which the governor promises to do. Then the governor gently asks Dr Crippen is he has anything else to say (hinting at a last gasp confession to unburden his soul). Dr Crippen is willing now to talk a little bit, provided that the governor will tell no one else what is said. It turns out that he really is innocent...of murder. But he did sedate his wife to shut her up after yet another vicious temper tantrum, and he was in the habit of doing that just so he himself could get some sleep. There was no intent to kill her, but in effect it was involuntary manslaughter. He kept quiet because his mistress, Ms Le Neve, so trustingly believed in his innocence. He could bear the hatred and contempt of all the world; but he could not bear it if she also lost her regard for him.

It is a remarkable character performance in which Pleasance presents Dr Crippen as a man not exactly innocent but very far from being the evil monster he was seen to be. He is shown as gentle, sensitive, dignified and very straight; it is not so hard to see why a woman twenty years his junior, and such a pretty woman, would want such a man as this.

In the last scene, Ms Eggar as Ethel Le Neve stands already dressed in widows black and stands outside a church looking intently at the clock. It strikes Eight o Clock. For a moment she trembles. Then she bows her head and walks disconsolately away.

I wish I could have seen the rest of this film if the rest of it was as powerful as this last section.

Default The Last Man on Earth (1964).

Starring Vincent Price This is the original Omega Man which came out in 1971
starring Charlton Heston. This is superior in my book almost identical only difference being this tells you how the world got wiped out by a germ Omega Man leaves that subject alone. Vincent is superb as the last man who has to live every day as it's his last with no one to share it with a good 87 minute story
with no real gore just a solid tale of what could happen one day if a Superbug
infected the world highly recommended 8/10.

I haven't seen this, so I'll have a look, but I'd like to see a remake that was faithful to the book. The vampyric aspect and the proper ending.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Start your engines and get ready for the Fast & Furious spin off franchise !!

PRAISE:

With these type of buddy movies you basically get two people that get on each's nerves or they just cant stand each other .I would say Hobbs & Shaw are right in the middle of the aforementioned.
The film presents super-villain Brixton (Idris Elba), the “black Superman.” and agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and master criminal/spy Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham)
One of the best things about the movie are the put down banter between the two.I actually laughed out loud several times as the two relentlessly spit out insults.
The actors have charisma and then some.I could tell Elba was having a great time sharing the screen with them.
As Deckard Shaw’s sister, Hattie Vanessa Kirby strikes a nice lovely balance between the two.
Some of the story threads were fun to follow .The film add some heart around it's edges.
I found myself slapping my knee at how man films this movie borrows from...in a good way. There were also nice nods to other action films.
I welcomed most of the over the top action.Nice semi funny guest cameos.

PROBLEMS:

I could easily pick this film apart for it's plot holes and inconsistencies in the script and visuals.
The script also goes into the repetitive zone which made the movie feel longer than its 2 hour and 15 minute run time. Some montages went on far to long.Suspension of disbelief was pushed to the limit.

All week long it has been hinted at that the F&F films will venture into space...ok sure why not...but when i left the theatre i said they might as well make the the F&F Transformers cross over movie !!

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

Default Holiday ( 2019 ) DirectorIsabella Eklöf

Sun and Fun on the Turkish Riviera
Then a Lot Less Fun
( my rating 1/5 )

This was a weird film Cert 18 Film - where Sascha is the young girl of “Holiday,” and appears briefly at an Turkish airport, rides on a bus and is soon at the house of Michael (Lai Yde), an older man who welcomes her to “the family.”
Michael’s work as a minor drug lord on the Turkish Riviera provides a comfortable lifestyle, one punctuated with threat and then actual violence.
The Actress Sascha (Victoria Carmen Sonne) was pretty good and the rest of the cast was okay - but not much story or suspense , and a pretty disgusting ( thankfully , brief ) rape scene - I would not recommend it -

in short - not much action or story - not one to recommend

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Dated sure, but still amusing to see Hugo Weaving and General Zod in drag. And Guy Pierce does a star turn as a flamboyant Queen.
