Help with DVD-RW burner [moved]
Hi there.
Hope someone can help me out with this here! I cannot read or burn ANY type of DVD disc in my drive. I am using a laptop with an NEC DVD-RW 6500 A 2.24. I am able to burn audio and picture discs, but as for DVD...FORGET IT! Can anyone please advise on the best (and cheapest) possible solution for this. I have tried various sites for an upgrade, but I just keep on getting bounced around the Web to various sites, when it says that the download programme is free! Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. GM. |

Its quite possible you don't have a DVD writer installed and can only use it as you would do a CD-ROM RW disk. You could take your laptop and get one fitted that not only acts like a CDwriter but also a DVDWriter. I had one installed on my old machine (PC) and it works a treat. You also need ripping software to take off anything from a DVD so you can then burn to DVD disk. Try a Google search for software, it might be free or time limited but you can see if you like it or not. My DVD Writer incidentally is by LG. It shouldn't cost you more than about £20-30 depending on where you get it-PC World do a wide range and will help you.

I googled your model # & the info I'm reading is that all you have is a CD burner. I don't see anything telling me that it's a DVD burner at all. Maybe some other brother can find that info, but I can't.
I thought I had a DVD burner when I bought my PC, but it was just a secondary reader drive. I had to buy a cheap external burner & plug it into my USB port. Actually, it's a Sony & it's a pretty good burner, but external burners don't cost too much. Just plug it in, wait for your PC to read the pre-installed drivers & when it says "this device is ready to use" then you're good to go. Hope that helps. |

Is it in device manager?
Try installing your burning program again http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/...urn-_nec-6500a |

Thanks to all of you who have tried to help with my DVD-RW burner issues.
I have recently taken the advice of Grossnex and purchased a seperate, external DVD RW burner. It is a Samsung, and (supposedly) runs on the Nero 9 system. However, when I try to install the actual programme files for the Nero 9, my laptop keeps on crashing during the installation process! I have tried, even the custom settings, which enables me to download only the items I want, but even that doesn't help...it still keeps on crashing. (ie; complete power shutoff!) Any suggestions or help would be extremely appreciated. GFM. |

If you're using Windows Vista or 7, then the windows movie maker should be all that you need to burn movies. It's not going to let you convert to different types of movie files, but it will let you burn/convert to a DVD format. If you have any other questions, just shoot me a pm. The entire process of figuring this out was extremely frustrating. I've probably been through every problem you're going through. I purchased more unwanted/not needed programs that I would really like to admit. |

Many thanks to all who have tried to help me with this.
Looks like the Samsung with the dreaded Nero 9 is going back to the shop for a refund then! Still, thanks to all who have taken the time to answer. Much appreciated. |
