Question What does "Blocked" mean?

I participate in many forums, but the only one I've ever seen where people are "blocked" is this one. Now "banned" I understand, but what is this "blocked", and how is it different from "banned"?

It's very puzzling to me. I look at a guy like dubsalute with thousands of posts to his credit, thousands of thanks, an obviously valued contributor, and I believe a former moderater, and this guy is "blocked".

If a guy like that is blocked, the threshold must be mighty low. If you're blocked, how do you get un-blocked? Who decides who's blocked? And why is this the only forum on earth where people are "blocked" as opposed to banned?

Just wondering about things today on this hot (30c) weekend. I am now going to have a cool beverage and think it over some more.

This info may be quite useful for those of us who don't want to end up being blocked.

Hmm. .here is what the rulebook says:

"Blocked! Member ..... blocked account, member no longer has access
! Member ... permanently banned account, member no longer has access"

If I understand this correctly blocked means a 'temporarily or limited lockout' while banned is well.. a permanent access denied. I would assume blocked is a time out if the transgression is not too great. The obvious clear case for banning is for instance posting child pornography, and blocking maybe not repeatedly adhering to the mods wishes about certain minor rules. But I'm only speculating..only the mods know for sure..

Dubsalute probably earned his right to choose a title and picked that for humorous reasons.

i always found dubsalute to be very helpful, understanding and useful to this forum. do not remember any mod saying why he is blocked or for how long that might be. he is a real loss to the others here who are not mods. shame about that is he is not alone in his use here to other members. in some cases they threw a temper tantrum but with his personality i doubt it.

any mod care to reply? merely interested how that mild a person got into trouble. me, i know why i do. been rather stubborn all my life. brick walls are in trouble against my head.

if blocked or banned - the effect to a member is the same. he can't post to this board anymore.

we set the banned status on spammers and new members who haven't posted much - cause their posts will be removed from the forum entirely and you shouldn't see them as posting members in our threads.

we set the blocked status for members who have allready posted much to the forum and it would be much work to remove all their posts including quoted replies by other members. to keep context of these quotes we don't remove the posts of those members.

the majority of the staff thinks that "blocked" looks nicer than "banned" so we agreed on a different "status" when banning members. imho it makes no difference, cause in the end, it's the same.

because we don't need to justify our decisions or decisions based on wishes by our members. if decisions are made, they have a valued reason, even if it means that we lost a very honored member who invested years helping to build up this forum.

DubSalute's importance is not forgotten and is still respected.

It was not my intention to start a thread about dubsalute. I wanted to know about the "blocked" tag. For the most part, my questions have been answered. Thank you.

Thumbs up dubsalute

former moderator, major poster, nice human and bigtime supporter of this forum. my only reason for asking was personal. said person had helped me several times and do miss an important source of info on many topics. hoping "block" was not permanent is all. thank you HOS for the reply as i also wanted to know the difference. not intending to create trouble asking about the gentleman.

you haven't raised trouble, flake. it's just that Dub has left the forum (this way) on his own wish. i can't go into detail cause it would get too personal - just one thing: if he ever wants to come back, the door is still open.
