Kate Mulgrew Had a Rule About Sex on Star Trek: Voyager

When it comes to sex on the starship Voyager, the captain had a strict rule. Speaking at Denver Comic Con, Star Trek: Voyager star Kate Mulgrew revealed that she had pretty strong ideas about not sexualizing Captain Janeway, the first female lead character in Star Trek franchise history. She even believes her stance eventually led to the introduction of Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine.

“That moment stands out for me when Jeri Ryan arrived. That was an interesting moment because – there’s been a lot of controversy about it generated by me – again unfortunate,” Mulgrew explained during her panel. “When you’re the first female captain you hope against hope that that’s going to be sufficient until the day it wasn’t. Because men like – as they should, as all of you should and I love and adore every one of you – they love sex. And they need it. And I said ‘No’ to all of that going in.

“I said, ‘I’m not going to sleep with Chakotay, it’s not going to happen,’” she recalled. “I said you’re just going to have to go somewhere else for it, so they got this very beautiful girl to come in. She played a wonderful character. And yes, I was unsettled by it because I had hoped – as I’m sure Hillary Clinton hoped. We all hope. Hope springs eternal that we can do it by ourselves but we still need sex. So that one stands out.”

Taking a firm stance on sex was just one way in which Mulgrew was forced to be firm after falling under an intense amount of scrutiny for being the first female Captain. Well, the first female captain to last for more than a day at least. The role of Janeway originally went to French-Canadian actress Genevieve Bujold.

“She lasted one day! As a result of that strange dance for the first six months at least ten guys from administration – Paramount, UPN – stood on the lip of the stage arms crossed like this and just watched me,” Mulgrew remembers. “They just watched. It was sort of unbelievably unnerving. But I took it as the gauntlet that it was. And I said to myself, ‘You want to play that game? Then I am going to play it with you and we will see wins this. And it’s going to be me.’

“Something in me rose up at the very thought that after Miss Bujold defected, that I would fail and then they would bring back another man,” Mulgrew continued. “I thought, ‘No, no, no we can’t have this. We simply cannot, we must go forward.’ And so we did. And guess who had me to the White House after the end of the first season? A woman by the name of Hillary Clinton.”

Buffy Star Blew Major Star Trek Role Audition

comicbook.com
Jamie Lovett
July 12, 2017

James Marsters is already part of some of the most beloved speculative fiction television franchises in history for having played Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and Captain John Hart in Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood. However, he almost joined the biggest science fiction television franchise of them all, Star Trek, but his own love of the series sabotaged him in the end.

Speaking to Sy Fy Wire, Marsters revealed that he’s a huge fan of
Star Trek and used to attend conventions as a teenager dressed as Mr. Spock. When asked about his favorite Star Trek moment, Marsters revealed it is the time he completely blew an audition while acting opposite to Patrick Stewart.

“My favorite moment was looking at Picard’s face when I was acting opposite him in the audition for the last Star Trek movie before they rebooted it because they wrote a role for me as his clone and I just had to read the part and it was basically mine,” Marsters reveals, referring to the role of Shinzon in Star Trek: Nemesis. “And I was horrible. I was god awful in the audition because I was fanboying out so hard to be in the room with Jean-Luc Picard.”

It's a moment that most fans can relate to and he remembers Stewart doing whatever he could to help out.

“I could see his face and he’s like pulling for me,”
Marsters recalls. He’s trying to get me to act with him, and I could see in his eyes like, ‘Wow, this is just not working at all. This kid is terrible.’”

Marsters ultimately lost the role and Shinzon was instead played by Tom Hardy. It's a moment that has stuck with Marsters ever since.

“I never saw him again,” Marsters says. “I’ve seen the other cast members and I’ve always wanted to tell them, ‘Tell Patrick that I was not at my best at that moment.’”

Marsters may have lost his chance to join the Star Trek universe, but he’ll become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by playing a member of The Pride in Marvel’s Runaways on Hulu later in 2017.

In Star Trek: Nemesis, Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) diverts the starship Enterprise from its scheduled trip to Cmdr. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Counselor Troi's (Marina Sirtis) wedding to negotiate a peace treaty with the Romulans. Picard is shocked when Shinzon (Tom Hardy), the new Praetor of the Romulans, admits to being a clone of him. When the crew members discover a break-in on their computer, they are forced into a life-or-death battle to stop Shinzon's Warbird before it can destroy the Earth.

This year Hallmark has two new Star Trek ornaments and they arrive in stores on Saturday, July 15th. This year’s ship is the U.S.S. Franklin from Star Trek Beyond, and the 30th Anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation is being celebrated with an ornament featuring Captain Picard and Data on the bridge of the Enterprise. TrekMovie got an early look at both for this review.

'Star Trek Tiki Mugs'

slashfilm.com
Ethan Anderton

http://www.slashfilm.com/star-trek-tiki-mugs/

For some reason, the tiki mug trend is here to stay, and the latest fan favorite property to get a full set of stylish libation containers is Star Trek.

ThinkGeek has announced a full line of tiki mugs inspired by the characters of Star Trek: The Original Series. Favorite crew members Captain James T. Kirk, Dr. Spock and Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy are included, and they’re joined by a Klingon, a Gorn and a Mugato.

Each of the mugs holds about 14 ounces of whatever you’re drinking to wash away your worries while exploring the final frontier. If you don’t believe me, you can check them out for yourself at San Diego Comic-Con at the ThinkGeek booth, #3349. They probably won’t let you measure just how much liquid fits into the tiki mugs, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.

These Star Trek tiki mugs are officially licensed by CBS Consumer Products, and if this trend of turning every popular character from film, television and comics into a tiki mug sticks, then maybe there will be a set of them for every Starfleet crew that has graced either the big screen or the small screen. Then again, maybe they need to finish the primary Star Trek crew first by having tiki mugs for Scotty, Uhura and Sulu. Don’t they deserve their own tiki mugs, folks?

Star Trek: Gene Roddenberry Didn't Want Patrick Stewart to Play Captain Picard

comicbook.com
by Jamie Lovett
August 6, 2017

Patrick Stewart played Captain Jean-Luc Picard through seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the four movies that followed. Roddenberry died in 1991, early on in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s run and Stewart recalls that he never seemed happy with the casting choice.

“Gene and I did not have a close relationship. We had a respectful relationship. Gene had very strongly felt that I was wrong for the role,” Stewart said during a panel at Star Trek Las Vegas. “I am told, and I don’t know the details, but there was a lot of warfare that went on in the producers' offices about that.”

The first shot fired in that war may have been simply that Stewart was discovered by producer Robert Justman, who was convinced Stewart was perfect for the role before ever discussing it with Roddenberry.

“I was invited up to Gene’s house one morning after I had been seen by Robert Justman on the stage at Royce Hall in UCLA,” Stewart recalled. “Justman discovered me. Apparently – and his wife claimed this was true – at some point during this scholarly, academic evening he turned to his wife and said ‘we found the captain.’

Gene saw me the next morning and profoundly disagreed.”

It was only through attrition that Roddenberry finally acquiesced to casting Stewart in the role.

“I got the feeling that he was ultimately kind of satisfied with how it turned out,” Stewart said.
