I have always seen the civil decorations as coming from a supermarket rewards system , you been a member that long you get given it, although I am very proud of them, but they disappear into insignificance with the awards getting given to such people!

With the big shiny ones on the other hand, I have had a slightly different view, what bloody fool in the clerical system got the wrong name on the citation, and used mine?
Many awards both military and civilian are a popularity contest. When I served (well short of Ruperts time thank goodness!!) there were and probably still are several awards for enlisted personnel that were basically given to those who the brass thought favorably of. Civilian ones are pretty much the same IMO.
The rich, the powerful, the popular and the suck ups are the ones who get the so called fruit salad.

I didn't want to bring this up in the RIP thread about Ugo Ehiogu because it is not really the right place. However I have noticed recently that the media use cardiac arrest and heart attack as one and the same cause of death. They did it for Carrie Fisher as well. The thing is they are not the same thing at all as any one with the most simplistic medical knowledge knows. A heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest but the causes of each are different. In the simplest terms a heart attack is a circulation problem and cardiac arrest is an electrical problem. It may seem a petty thing but its just one of those things that annoys me.

When one of my daughters was about four, I used to loosen the top on a jar, then put it back loosely and pretend I couldn't open it! It was worth it just to see the big smile of delight! Dads know what I mean!

This deserves special acknowledgement.

Slipping beck to the Beckham's, my view on them changed when I saw them on Children of Courage. There was a young girl, who had a terminal illness and had raised a lot of money for the charity that researched her disease. David was in America, so joined on video link, but Victoria was with the girl, it was obvious that their support for her was absolutely genuine, there was true warmth and affection between them, and it even showed on the video link. David had even carried her on to the pitch at Wembley for an International, fulfilling one of her biggest ambitions. So I had to admit they were not just seeking publicity. Sadly she died aged 11 a year or so ago.

BUT why was he all over the London Olympics? He has never been an Olympian! He has never represented GB at anything, and he has never won anything at international level! Supposedly he helped with the bid, to many he won it! Yeah right!
