Influences and personal heroes

In my childhood and youth my influences were my friends - and these influences wasn't often the best ones. Most of the time I was a viewless follower. I had a personal opinion for sure but I didn't spoke for myself.

I really start building my character only after I left school and began working as a male nurse. Other people's destiny often can be an eye-opener and I would recommend every young person to work in a hospital or almshouse for a while (German hospitals often search for coworkers on a voluntary basis) before begin studying or entering the job market. They will learn a lot about themselves when they learn about so many different people's lives. Only one benefit of this job will be that they 'unlearn' the typical dumb flippancy young people often have.

Back to topic: IMO we can't really clarify the sources of our influences. Our subconscious mind processed many impressions in the past we didn't realize or our consciousness had plumb forgotten. Especially children are like psychic sponges: their minds become easily saturated in the subtle influences.

I voted for my parents. My parents taught me about love. My mom was really ill the last six or so years of her life. I watched my dad bust his ass to do whatever he could to make her life a little easier. A lot of guys would have bailed in that situation. I see how many people bail on a marriage the second it gets tough. My parents showed me what those vows really mean. I will always love and respect them for that. My other personal heroes are The Beatles. Their music has given me countless hours of enjoyment and comfort.

Ah superheroes are the best kind of heroes to have , my own was the Green Lantern and it all started back in 1983 on holiday in Ibiza when i spent 100 pesetas and bought this comic

My year 11 electrical class teacher, he hated me.
He had the biggest singe most influence on my life that goes on to this day, 26 years later.
In class one day the kid next too me whipped me with a length of wire, why I don't know so my reaction was too belt him, he fell and the teacher made me apologise. I stood my ground and wouldn't. So after that I had to spend every Tuesday afternoon sitting outside the principals office after getting the belt and was not allowed back into electrical class until I apologised.
One Saturday morning in town I bumped into the class teacher and he asked If I was ever going too apaolgise, I replied never, not till the other kid admitted too starting it all. So to that the teacher replied "You're good for nothing, and I hope that's what becomes of you, you little cu*t". His exact words, I'll never forget them. I replied, just for that "I'm going to become what you are" just too prove him wrong and make him eat his words. Needless to say I failed his class, left school and took on a course that enabled me to get an electrical apprenticeship and Thats how I got into my profession.


Oh and this person, his music just make sense too me

Hmmm Hadn't seen this thread before now.I was going to start this thread, but decided to search first.Good thing.That's twice today someone beat me to an idea Oh well....great minds think alike.


I grew up watching my dad drunk, high, smoking weed, snorting coke, beating the hell out of my mom,and brothers.I was a bit too little to beat, but they divorced before I had to pay my dues.Branded in my memory is the day he he grabbed my brother's crutch ( broken leg) and beat him with it.
I never had a "fatherly " influence but became close with my grandfather.I guess he's my hero because he was always there for me.
Somewhere along the line my dads influence made a reverse effect.I decided to live opposite of the way he lived. No drugs( well maybe some experimentation after high school, but that was the crossroads for me)

I have a great marriage,a great kid who I spend every available minute with, and though I can't say I don't drink, I can say the last time I was drunk was Oct. 2001. Not really a problem there.

Thanks dad for being an anti hero.There's a lesson in everything- you just have to make the right choices.

Darn, I could have written that. When my mom was ill, I did the cooking, cleaning, washing etc etc etc. Oh, and did I mention looking after my little brother who (forty years on) is still as useless as he was then? My Dad busted his ass, working 12 hours a night, six nights a week (seven when he could get the overtime). I did the homemaker bit. When I asked my Dad how I could ever repay him, he said, "It's simple. When it's your turn to bust your ass, just do it". Where I part company with you, my friend, is that we had to choose between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger loves cricket. There was no choice to make. England for the Ashes!

Mrs.Church, long gone now, but remembered forever. courage to tell a local group of fanatic church fools where they could go with their belief that many books in her library had to be removed. yep, they existed back then as well as today. she escorted them out of the library by the scruff of the neck. she later explained to a school principal the same sort of idea when he made a young lady wearing an outfit of quite probably two hundred dollars (1962) remove it because "it showed too much clevage". the next day, mrs. Church showed up with the exact same outfit and promptly marched into his office and waited for him to make her change. he did not.

never under estimate the cougage of a quiet and dedicated librarian. we all could learn alot from the people who demonstrate this type of courage daily.

Ilya Kuryakin (David McCallum) on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. He was one of the few, perhaps the only, blond guy on American TV at the time (1965) who was cool.
And he did a far better job of "being" cool than Robert Vaughn, who "played" it - and rather broadly at that.
