After looking at all the posts I see no one appears to have mentioned the forerunners of today's comics. The fantastic Sid Ceasar and Imogene Coco. They did all the TV routines live, no tape. Then there was George and Gracie, Luci and Desi, Dick Van Dyke and many others to numerous to mention. Also some of these great comics, young and old, were/are only as good as their writers. Just because you can deliver a joke doesn't mean you are actually funny, the joke is in the writing and the delivery.

Saw Sam Kinison live in concert in 1988. He was awesome.

If we are going back in history then I remember seeing Freddie Sales in Las Vegas. for younger members he was a comic on a par with Morecambe & Wise pre TV but unlike them couldn't make the transition and with demise of music hall faded from view. He ended up in Vegas writing jokes for Bob Hope and hosting the shows there. Very funny man. - Also got to see Diana Ross in same show.
