'Buy German or Jap: The rest is crap.'

Hold my beer scoundrel!

How about a real German classic?

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...601_Estate.jpg

Trabant 601 de Luxe. 0.6l two cylinder two-stroke engine, 26 bhp, leaf spring suspension, steering wheel. Rust is unlikely since the car body is made of cardboard. Good, reliable and cheap.

Alternatively, I would recommend this model to you.

The C5 is usually a good buy. Weak points are the brakes and the wishbones.

Nobody I had an A6 2.5D for 6 years, 30k miles to 120k miles. Comfortable, smooth and easy to drive. Brilliant car. Replaced it with a BMW 520D which was alright.

Really ? Seems a bit of a sweeping statement.

I suppose it depends on which American car .

I'm with Estreeter - what is there not to like about an enormous V8?

9 mpg around town !!!!! But I did once get 14 mpg on a journey to Edinburgh by sticking to 55 mph the whole way.

You have to keep in mind this car and it's 7 litre V8 was built when so-called "gasoline" was about 30 cents for a US gallon.

In the aftermath of the Yom Kippur war when the price of oil rose very steeply I recall my father coming in one night white faced and shocked because he'd had to pay 50 pence for a UK gallon . He reckoned it was the end of civilization as he knew it.

Probably a bit more expensive than my £1,000 budget, and not frequently encountered in independent used car dealerships in North London...

Pfff.... German classic? I'd take the Skoda 120L any day (Model of 1978), that was a great wee car. Fun to drive, fun to look after (and easy as pie). I learned to drive on it and it was my 1st car for years. Still swear by Skodas.

What Scounds needs is not just a V8, 5 litre minimum I might add, but a Ute

What kind of Utes are available in the UK with a V8
