There was a group in Geneva, Switzerland in the late 60s/early 70s. The father of a friend of mine joined them together with his wife. They had sold almost everything they had and given it to the leader. Christ, I don't recall the name of the group right now. "World Disciples" or "Disciples of a young world", something like that.

Amazing when you think what people act like if they're just twisted enough.

So far as I know, the biggest group is in Australia, and includes some of the folks from Oregon. Was it because they saw the surf rescue flags and assumed they were signs of welcome?

The Sannyasins are followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Born 11th December 1931 died 19th January 1990), and are commonly known as The Orange or Osho People. Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh became well known for owning 93 Rolls Royce cars.

They are the biggest of several unorthodox sects that have found a home in Byron Shire and now make up a very significant percentage of the shires population with the local Byron Bay organiser ,Shahido, estimating that 2000 of the shire's 30,000 residents are Sannyasins.

The Sannyasins' pet hates are organised politics and religion and Osho teaches that the churches are bad and that God is a fiction created by "cunning priests."

"The Sannyasins own several high profile businesses in Byron Bay and the hinterland town of Mullumbimby as well as three large communal properties in Byron Shire - Jindibah near Bangalow, Gondwana at Tyagrah, and Mevlana near Mullumbimby - along with several small multiple occupancy holdings.

The sect controversially almost took over the town of Antelope in Oregon USA in the 1980's before community tensions led to the disbandment of the sect in 1985 . The Oregon commune collapsed at that time when Osho revealed that the commune leadership had committed a number of serious crimes, including a bioterror attack (food contamination) on the citizens of The Dalles, Oregon.

Many of the former Antelope sect members subsequently migrating to Australia to Pemberton in Western Australia and thence to Byron Bay and Mullumbimby, many marrying Australian citizens.

Community tensions do continue to exist but Byron Shire Deputy Mayor Peter Westheimer believes the Sannyasins cannot be described as a cult. "They are totally integrated into the community and they add to the mix of the Byron family and they are part of what makes the Byron community unique."
