Default Osho aka Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh - Any Experiences?

Yes I burn incense sticks and yes I do own a singing bowl which I touch from time to time to find peace and calmness beyond posting boobs and questionable threads.

My question: Has anyone joined this movement in the 70s/80s? Or does anyone know some people who were into it? Is there anything you could tell us/me?

Maybe this is the place to find out more about it than the average media documentaries will ever tell.

Don't be shy.

I just had breakfast in The Dalles the other day, where the Rajneeshis poisoned a salad bar, years ago. The Rajneeshis are gone from Oregon, but you can find some in Australia, northern NSW near the border with Qld, a town called Mullumbimby. Nice place, and they haven't poisoned anyone there, so that's a point in their favor . . .

There was a piece about the very scary chick, "Sheela" who'd been the dragon lady of the Oregon community, and was responsible for the poisonings. . . she did some jail time and now lives in Switzerland.

One of our local papers did a "where are they now" of various Rajneesh figures

Thank you for the insight and the link, deepsepia. This thing really seems having ended beyond any romanticism.

The folks in Mullumbimby are plenty romantic, and there are a fair number of them. It's a community in the Border Ranges, roughly southwest of Byron Bay. What happened in Oregon seems to have reflected a lot of craziness, but rather less spirituality; not repeated elsewhere.

It was a strange time, and they were moving in, in large numbers, to a rural community. I don't know the full story of just which screw came loose, but Indian mysticism in Oregon had a long lasting impact in the life of one sometime Reed College student, Steve Jobs. He describes walking across Portland to eat meals at the Hare Krishna center (he'd dropped out of college and was broke) . . .

He then went to India, where he famously expanded his consciousness. Jobs was in Portland 1972, I think . . . The Rajneeshis didn't arrive until later, 1980 or so. Not sure whether the Krishnas became Rajneeshis, or were connected in some other way.

Well there`s no point expecting Me , Mal or Estreeter to know anything about it
As we weren't born until 1990

Although Scoundrel might as I believe he was born in 1880

Well...are you sitting comfortably...let me tell you a tale...

Back in the day a quiet little town called Perth, named after the short form of "Paradise on Earth" (no not that one the other one) was minding it's own business digging up all manner of things and making boat loads of money. Still does.

Along came the Bag-lady, er sorry, Ma Anand Sheela and... quoting the great oracle wikipedia...

"In 1985, Sheela visited Australia as a spokeswoman for Rajneesh, and to assess the western area for a potential site for an ashram. She gained nationwide prominence after remarks during her interview with reporter Ian Leslie on 60 Minutes. When asked about local concerns over plans for the Rajneesh cult's expansion in Western Australia, she famously replied, "Tough titties" ".

The "concerns" were many, not least because it was alleged that new recruits would rock up to hear bagwan "rabbit on" for a bit then the doors were locked, the lights go out and the newbies set upon in a sexual free-for-all. I think it was call "enlightenment through sexual freedom". So obviously a "new idea" then.

Being relatively young I didn't have the pleasure of rolling around with the bag-lady but it was a bit of a joke amongst the grown-ups. Especially as even then (before atheism gained "cult" status), most people didn't go for spiritualism in any form but then up rocks the bagwan and suddenly "elightenment" was in. So clearly it was just the sex.

Cheers
