You're taking the wrong point.

This appears to be a very narrow reference to the idea "barter society" is the notion of an economy which runs entirely on barter.

What he's saying is "we can't find a society which doesn't have any idea of money-- where the only transaction is barter".

That's true.

We don't have a record of such a society.

Why not?

Because you can only do very simple transactions. People rapidly see the need for more complex transactions, and so they invent money, often starting with some commodity.

This isn't about "economists" vs "anthropologists" as you seem to think . . .
