I agree with the others as far as internet access is concerned Santee. Stick with the cable. As far as TV is concerned, I've been a Direc** subscriber going on 20 years now. I've been through two moves with them, and they've delivered what they promised as far as the free, new installs are concerned, and I've never had any complaints with their customer service through several equipment upgrades/installs, or billing concerns. Dish on the other hand, has several class action lawsuits that I believe are still ongoing, and the son of one of my friends is involved with it. He has nothing good to say, and if you believe the current Direc** commercials, they apparently somehow pick, and choose what you're able to record through their DVR service.

For your internet, you have cable and the phone line. In my area they have high speed DSL over the phone line and it works pretty well. Cable is superior but this depends on who your cable provider is. If it's Comcast my advice is DON'T. If you have the slightest problem, it will take hours and hours of waiting and talking on the phone to a dumb as a box of rocks "customer service" rep who will not solve your problem, and when you call back you will have to start all over again with someone new. Always take down the date, time, and who you talked to, because they will contradict each other.

As for TV, I wish I had my Direct TV back. I moved to a condo and the association is already contracted to Comcast as a part of the monthly assessment. So even though they stink, there's no sense in paying twice for something. Yes, the dish can go out in a heavy downpour but that doesn't last long. My dish went through a Cat 2 hurricane and was still on my roof afterward. (I had set it in concrete blocks). So when the electric went back on so did the dish. The people across the street had everything with Comcast, and they had to wait an extra week for their TV internet and VOIP to go back up.

Excellent point Hugo. "Rain fade" with the satellite is an issue, but as you stated, it's short term. We have a standby generator that runs the whole house when the power shits the bed (which is quite frequently in my neck of the woods when someone sneezes too loud/hard). As soon as the generator spins up, we have our satellite TV back, but my internet is hosed until the utility power comes back on. Comcast does suck, and so does Time Warner (my provider) and if they have their way, they will be merging soon (to the tune of $45 billion) which will make them the largest multimedia conglomerate in the country. Can you say monopoly? If you think your bills are too high, or your service with them is worthless now, just wait till they have no one to answer to.

SanteeFats,

Just FYI, talked with a friend yesterday who has satellite internet. Its all he can get where he is and it costs about $80 per month. He wasn't sure how it was connected but he didn't think his computer was connected to the land line he also has. And I couldn't check. So still don't know if the upload requires a land line any more.

My building has a contract with Comcast cable. It has all the regular channels and the basic cable channels. I don't watch it much. When I want news I look at my local Chicago news station, or I look at CNN news. Most of the other cable channels are in my opinion junk! When I want to watch a good movie I rent from Netflix or watch my own movies that I own which is now over 370 of them on videotape and DVD,
