Cimino also directed Thunderbolt & Lightfoot before Deer Hunter. That's a movie I really like, being a huge Clint Eastwood fan. Jeff Bridges' character stood out big time, pretty fascinating overall. Deer Hunter, from what I remember, was a fantastic movie. I haven't seen Heaven's Gate, but I heard some stories about that doomed production. Very sad to lose him regardless. More hits than misses in my estimation.

Everyone is quoting Caroline Aherne's line at Debbie McLean but my favourite was to George Best:
"So, Georgie. . Georgie Best.. do you think if you'd have done less running around when you were younger, you wouldn't have been quite so thirsty?" |

Michael Cimino was one of the biggest talents to emerge during the New Hollywood era but his artistry was overshadowed by megalomania, narcissism (or self-hatred?) and defamation by the big Hollywood studios. Heaven's Gate was named one of the worst movies in the last few decades just because it allegedly ruined a major film studio. The fact that the movie was ruined in the first place just because the studio executives feared it wouldn't match their profit expectations was never mentioned as a possible reason why the Heaven's Gate tale ended with a catastrophy. But it's also true that Cimino was a very complicated person, a man who had a lot of issues with himself which strained his relationships with other people, especially his colleagues. For some he was a true professional, for others a real nightmare. Was Michael Cimino a genius? At least he thought so and here of course lies one part of the problem. All the conflicting and unreliable biographical data about him and the plastic surgeries that made him look unrecognizable speak of a man who never came to terms with himself. Nevertheless, he was a very talented director and writer and I will always be a big fan of Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Deer Hunter, Heaven's Gate and Year of the Dragon.

Sorry to go back to Gordon Murray but I just remembered a special sequence was shot for fantasy police drama Life on Mars when Sam(John Simm) a policeman that is knocked down in the present only to wake up in 1973. He switches on a television to see 'Camberwick Green' - a 'puppet' version of Gene Hunt(Phillip Glenister) "beating up a nonce." It was specially created by the BBC effects department including a back street alleyway and had Murray's approval.

Gymnastics presenter/commentator and coach/consultant of the Dutch gymnastics team since 2010 Mitch Fenner has died at the age of 70. Personally I and my father are sad at his untimely passing because he knew him well through another much missed commentator/presenter, the late Ron Pickering. I miss him because he used to ring here to speak to my father and I got talking to him once on whether he thought British gymnasts would ever get better - they did of course but at the time we were basically crap at it. RIP Mitch we all miss you. He did the voice-over for the ill-fated gymnastics show TUMBLE in 2015 on BBC1. This was where celebrities had to learn routines and then show them to chief judge, former Romanian child gymnast, Nadia Comaneci.
