Vince and I have been disagreeing with one another about the concept of treason for years. He is rather fascinated by the 1351 treason law (still wondering why Will Carling and James Hewitt haven't been beheaded perhaps) but doesn't quite accept that in our modern settlement the Queen represents the state as a whole.

Here is how I set out my own view on this topic in discussion with Vince a while back on this thread. I think my argument remains on point, although I accept that Vince doesn't agree - it's a free country, right?

meanwhile some good news - the luck of the Irish

EuroMillions: Family syndicate wins 175m euro jackpot
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-47299179

A family syndicate from Dublin has come forward to claim Tuesday's EuroMillions jackpot, worth more than 175m euros (£152m).

I know many don't like the lottery and claim it is a tax on the stupid but I still play it every now and again and I suspect that family won't give a toss about that viewpoint.

I wish all of them the very best in coping with the extra hassle such a large win will no doubt bring.

This seems to be the closest the US has to the UK's ISIS bride.

https://abcnews.go.com/US/isis-bride...ry?id=61193487

I don't see many Americans disagreeing with Trump on this decision.

The old adage 'you made your bed-now sleep in it' seems entirely appropriate under the circumstances....these individuals voluntarily chose to leave their countries and make common cause with an organisation and individuals whose actions were the subject of world wide opprobrium. There are some actions people take in life where you should have to live with the consequences regardless of your later philosophical position-and the 'but think of the children' is a morally bankrupt argument. We do not pardon people because their children might find life a bit more difficult if their parent or parents are imprisoned or otherwise sanctioned....

Derek Hatton has been suspended from the Labour Party just two days after he was readmitted.

The former deputy leader of Liverpool City Council had his membership reinstated on Monday after he was expelled from the party 34 years ago.

He has been notified of suspending pending an investigation into a tweet he posted in 2012, according to the Liverpool Echo.

It is understood this tweet, which has since been deleted, included criticism of the actions of the Israeli government and urged British Jews to speak out against its actions.

Details:
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/d...-a4072251.html
Given that the tweet was some six or seven years before they reinstated him one would think they could have checked that before letting him back in.

You are talking about the bunch of throwbacks that are the modern Labour Party though, a place where someone as moronic as Dianne Abbott can thrive and people still worship Tony Blair

Perfect place to hold the Mad Hatton's tea party

Assuming they are still there or under their control of course.

Even then you want Mr Assad and his own bunch of terrorists to administer justice for the rest of the world?
Why should Assad care about the murder of UK charity workers or western journalists?

He may just decide its better for his agenda to send them off to the west to do further damage to their common enemy - us.

What's the point in having legislation to prosecute UK citizens for terrorist acts abroad if you don't use it. It's just a cop out, passing the buck to someone else for short term political gain with the reactionary tabloid angry mob who no doubt will be 'outraged' again if these terrorists are free to come back and attack us again.

"Rightly so" only because you Brits have a very strange concept of "treason".

You Americans jolly nearly hanged Tokyo Rose.
That's the sort of thing Donald Trump believes. In fact, one woman, Iva Toguri, was framed for being "Tokyo Rose" when in fact there were several women who made English language broadcasts. Through a very tortured legal process Ms Toguri, whose actions came nowhere near meeting the constitutional standard, was convicted of treason and given a prison sentence because she returned to the U.S. during the McCarthy Era.

When the extent of prosecutorial misconduct became apparent, she was pardoned. The whole loathsome story is set forth here:

She is represented by counsel. It appears that her citizenship is in dispute. The matter will be settled through the courts.

There is no reason to get one's panties in a twist.
