Movies to DVD - Page 3

I've got a few films I'd like to share with the forum, but having trouble finding a good, easy (hopefully) free program to go from DVD to avi. Got some suggestions awhile back from DubSalute and others, but couldn't to get it to work - maybe it's me; I'd rate my skill level at 7 out of 10. Anything new out there? I'm using XP. Thanks to all.

Get the AVS Media Video Conversion software, it's great, converts in all directions and even copys DVDs to hard disk! NOTE: You can download a test version at http://www.avsmedia.com/!

There are many ways to skin a cat, kick a dog, or whatever.
There are lotsa conversion programs out there, some more complex than others, that will do what is required. A very useful site is After Dawn - great ripping programs and decoding/encoding software. Be careful when one rips a DVD these days - DVD Shrink or Smart Ripper don't rip a lot of the more recent DVDs (the DVD companies have gotten wise to some of the older ripping programs). But there are always new rippers coming out - you just have to keep checking.
Also, if you want to play AVI files on a DVD player, make sure the player can read encoded DIVX or XVID files, otherwise you're wasting your time; the files must then be encoded as MPEGs.
I tend to keep my files on my hard drive - keeps the snoopers at bay. I rip everything to the hard drive and convert them to smaller files, with very little loss of quality (that obviously depends on how I got them).
I tend to veer toward AVIs, cos they're compact and I get pretty good results with the software I use. My way is the old-fashioned way (a bottle of whisky and five programs - any DVD ripper (DVD shrink, or Magic DVD Ripper); DVDtoAVI; Vfapi converter; CDEX MP3 encoder; VirtualDub using the Windows Media 9 Encoder (for the video) and Lame (for the Audio).
It's very time intensive, but I get nice results. You'd need to do a bit of reading up on these programs to understand how they work, but there are tons of sites with documentation on the net.

A lot of players will play avi files these days,or just about every convertor on the market free or otherwise will convert to dvd.

'dvd flick' is a free program that will convert almost any files into dvd format and will create a title screen and menus, it has 6 different templates to choose from, or if you know a little bit about what you are doing you can change the templates just about any way you want.

Don't DVDs have formats like NTSC and PAL, for Europe, the US, Asia etc?
Maybe it's just set on the wrong country format?

Best is to convert to DVD format, some players also support avi format.

DVD Flick as pointed out by gluten is usefull freeware to convert to DVD format:

...... in dvd flick, have a look at 'project settings' - 'burning' and make sure the 'create iso image' button is unchecked, then dvd flick should convert whatever files you put into it into a format that will play in any dvd player, you won't have to convert them again after that. all you will have to do is burn the output folder 'video ts', (which contains all the menus and titles and the converted dvd ready video files) to a dvd, and this should play on any dvd player old or new.

Best to convert the full dvd to avi , split into the scenes you wish , then convert each split into a seperate dvd.

That would work but for £35 you can get a dvd that will play xvid and divx so you have to ask yourself - is it really worth all the headaches.
