How to deal with the .001, .002, etc. and .001.xtm., .002.xtm., etc. files ...
.001, .002, etc. files: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The .001, .002, etc. files that you sometimes encounter are the parts of one bigger file that has been split up in smaller segments with tools like the small freeware program HJSplit: HJSplit is just a tool to split up (bigger) files of any file format into smaller parts, the second functionality of HJSplit is to join the parts back together again. To rejoin the parts you first need to download all parts to the same folder on your computer (leave the .001, .002, etc. extensions as they are) and then join them with HJSplit: Run HJSplit > Join > Input File > browse to the location with the parts > open the .001 file (the only one you will see) > press Start and it gets joined. After making sure the rejoined file runs properly, you can go ahead and delete the .001, .002, etc. parts you will no longer need them. When a file that is split into those .001, .002, etc... parts is a .rar or .zip archive you can extract it after joining. HJSplit (298 kB)(good clean freeware, Windows 9x/2000/NT/ME/XP/Vista/7 (HJSplit 2.3), Mac, Linux, etc.) Needs no install just unzip and double click on the exe to run the program. HJSplit manual | How to join a file FFSJ: The Fastest File Splitter and Joiner -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New alternative for HJSplit, its a bit faster and has some more options, its also clean freeware. There are 2 versions: a FFSJ-Lite (no install like HJSplit) and a FFSJ-Standard version (both freeware): Quote:
Home | Download | Manuals .001.xtm, .002.xtm, etc. files: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another type of split files thats a bit more rare are the .001.xtm, .002.xtm, etc. files, same story as with HJSplit, those are also parts of a (bigger) file that was split up. The freeware splitting/joining program that creates and can join these parts is called Xremsplit. Same as with HJSplit you need to to download all parts to the same folder on your computer to succesfully rejoin them. After making sure the rejoined file runs properly, you can go ahead and delete the .001.xtm, .002.xtm, etc. parts you will no longer need them. Xremsplit (freeware, French/English, Windows 2000/XP/Vista (32 bits) and Linux 1.2) Versatile file splitter/joiner its free, small, clean, good ... and French ... Download (Télécharger) Windows version (299 kB): http://xtremsplit.fr/page-xtremsplit...n-windows.html No install just double click the .exe to run the program. You can set it to English via 'Options'. Compatible with: Quote:
MAC OS X joiner: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAC OS X users can use the freeware Split&Concat as listed in the Mac OS Programs and Tools thread: Quote:
Note on joining split parts: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To prevent damaged joins make sure that all parts are downloaded, in the same folder/location and are named identical except for the split file extensions (.001, .002, .003, etc.) When you miss a part or have a wrongly named part you will end up with a incomplete join as these tools join from part 1 up and stop where the "chain" ends. filename.ext.001 filename.ext.002 filename.ext.003 <--------------------------------------------------- part .004 is missing filename.ext.005 filename.ext.006 filename.ext.007 When joining the files as listed above then the file joiner will only join parts .001, .002 & .003!!! you will have a incomplete and corrupt join. filename.ext.001 filename.ext.002 filename.ext.003 filename.ext.004 filename.ext.005 filenume.ext.006 <---------------------------------- not identicaly named part filename.ext.007 When joining the files as listed above then the file joiner will only join parts .001, .002, .003, .004 & .005!!! you will have a incomplete and corrupt join. Other thing to keep a eye on are the filesizes: all the parts must be exactly the same filesize only the last part is allowed to be smaller, when one of the first parts is smaller then the others it needs to be redownloaded or you will end up wit a corrupt file after the join. filename.ext.001 = 99,9 MB (104.857.000 bytes) filename.ext.002 = 99,9 MB (104.857.000 bytes) filename.ext.003 = 95,2 MB (99.858.692 bytes) <----- incomplete downloaded part filename.ext.004 = 99,9 MB (104.857.000 bytes) filename.ext.005 = 99,9 MB (104.857.000 bytes) filename.ext.006 = 99,9 MB (104.857.000 bytes) filename.ext.007 = 16,8 MB (17.630.672 bytes) In the example above filename.ext.003 is corrupted and needs to be downloaded again, when you still have a corrupt join and all first parts are exactly the same then most likely the last part is corrupt, redownload and try to extract. Should work then otherwise it could be that the file was allready corrupted before it was split. Last edited by DubSalute; April 25th, 2010 at 02:39 PM.. Reason: added note ... |

Wonderfully clear guidance. I spent two wretched hours trying to figure out how to operate hj split in order to join 001 and 002 files. Before thrusting my head into the gas oven I had a look at the tech advice here. I then joined the files and extracted them with .rar in seconds! Very many thanks for sharing your knowledge.

jZip Archive Utility
Quote from developer's page: "Create, open and extract Zip, TAR, GZip and 7-Zip. Open and extract from RAR and ISO".
What it doesn't mention, but what I believe makes this unique amongst similar utilities is its ability to join .001 files without the need for additional programs like HJSplit. Just right-click on the first file and unzip it as normal and it automatically joins the all the files in sequence. I should point out, however, that it will only join .001 files, it won't split them. You can download it from here: http://www.jzip.com/. Click on the Products tab on their web page and download the Corporate version which comes without any add-ons such as Google toobars etc. Regards.

It appears that Xtremsplit is no longer freeware. At least, I haven't found a "free download" button to hit on their web page, only a "Telecharger" which requires you to select a payment method. The website is in french and beyond my limited translational abilities. Anyone know how to access the freeware?

I just tried my favorite file management utility, Total Commander, and it successfully joined the split files. This is the niftiest file management utility I've used. I've used it for years. It seems to be able to do about anything you'd like to do with files. It's shareware, and I bought my copy, but it doesn't seem to have a time limit. It just comes with a simple nag screen when you first run it.

joining files problem
Thanks for the great site and the advice and tutes.
I've been trying for about a week to join some files, my problem is this, the first "part' is in a Zip file, the other seven are not, the different join programs recognise the Zipped .001 file but not the other seven, if I extract the file from the ZIP, the joining programs don't recognise it. If I run the join program on the zip file it "joins" that one part, which I can then play. I just can't get the other seven files to be recognised, they all have the correct extensions .002.003.004 etc. Thanks for any help or advice I just can't find any info for this problem Mods if this is in the wrong place please move. |
