My Virgin Media has always been up to speed when I've tested it.But a lot of sites are still damned slow.

Same here in the states. Comcast was supposed to throttle folks, hell kill your connection for a month or 2 or a year if you went over 250 gigs a month. However I exceed that on a regular basis. It all has to do with where you live and how many other big bandwidth users are in your area. I wouldn't recommend being a serious bandwidth hog if you live in a big city. I live in small city of 50k folks. So I don't get spanked.

From what I've read about folks here in the states getting spanked for being hogs, you get in trouble much more easily if you live in a big city.

I have Comcast Broadband. I could pay for a higher speed, but I just don't need it

Best I can get is about 5mbs. My area is throttled by BT Openreach who control via an exchange called 'Highway' appropriate given what a bunch of robbers they are. You'll be watching something on iPlayer and get about 5 interruptions per hour for 30 seconds each time.

Doesn't matter who we buy the service from, it will be the same. Fibre is in the area but won't reach us for another year or so. We've been with Utility Warehouse for BB, line, gas & electric for a couple of years, before that BT & BG.

Sky Fibre 30mb. Im sitting here streaming 1080p xfiles to my tv whilst uploading an 1.6gb file (takes an hour or so).

Cant complain. Better service and less outages than when i was with virgin.

They uprated my speed from time to time as part of the package I'm on. At present it's "up to 200 Mps" though the "up to" bit is much in evidence!
I remember the time when my first broadband as 500 kps and how fast that seemed! Problem is that, along with the extra speed the files are getting bigger as well. Some sites are lightning fast such as Zippyshare but others still crawl.

I dont have a fast internet connection; I am with Plusnet.

For anybody considering fibreoptic I enquired of Plusnet and EE. It is fibreoptic to the green cabinet at the end of the street then down sixty year old copper cable
