I would say that often letters may have been made up. 'Bernard Campion' does sound familiar. though. Was there an actor of that name?

I've mentioned the Social History aspct of S & S before. The changes in fashion sported by the likes of Susan Douglas over five or seven years is worthy of a dissertaion all on it's own!

That was what I loved about Spick and Span. It always looked like "Hey, love, show us your knickers" ... click! And women's underwear was different then. Ah ... nylon briefs! The suspenders and what not always seemed just to get in the way.

Bernard Archer was a stalwart of British drama in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Gerald Campion (I think!) was B.B.C. Television's 50s 'Billy Bunter'. Neither sound likely to write to a girlie magazine under their stage names.

PhilDee's postings have proved "educational" for me. As a later collector of S&S (1970 onwards) I really never saw much of the earlier issues. I have to agree entirely with what sevket and Medium2 said in their postings and believe S&S represented a social model of the times in terms of fashion, style and, most importantly, social acceptability. I must also add however, that for me, the most enjoyable era of the magazines was later rather than earlier when a more "saucy" and relaxed mode of posing had been adopted. As, munlatfrip put it, the "Hey, love, show us your knickers" approach. Halcyon days ! Nick
