Default Americans have never lost a war?

"As a southerner, I would say one of the main importances of the war was that southerners have a sense of defeat which none of the rest of the country has. You'll see in the movie 'Patton' the actor playing Patton saying 'we Americans have never lost a war.'

That's a rather amazing statement for him to make as Patton because Patton's grandfather was in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, and he certainly lost a war."

-Shelby Foote

"The liberty of the press in this country can only be maintained by the vigilance of the people and the vigilance of the Parliament and the courage of the newspapers themselves. That’s the only way. Therefore we must fight, fight, fight to retain those liberties."

Michael Foot as acting editor of the Evening Standard, coming to the defence of the Daily Mirror in 1942.
The Mirror had published the following cartoon by Philip Zec in March 1942 which so infuriated Prime Minister Winston Churchill (due to his misreading of the cartoon's intentions), that he almost had the newspaper shut down:

An astonishing cartoon by Zec but times have changed and I'm not sure I understand the point of it.

At first it looks as if, in despair, the man has committed suicide.

Or - he's doggedly fighting on? If there's no petrol for his ship, he'll use a raft?

The cartoonist ironically mentions the increase in the price of petrol - because it's so unimportant?

I suppose people understood it better at the time - even though Churchill didn't.
