The Mirror had published the following cartoon by Philip Zec in March 1942 which so infuriated Prime Minister Winston Churchill (due to his misreading of the cartoon's intentions), that he almost had the newspaper shut down:

An astonishing cartoon by Zec but times have changed and I'm not sure I understand the point of it.

At first it looks as if, in despair, the man has committed suicide.

Or - he's doggedly fighting on? If there's no petrol for his ship, he'll use a raft?

The cartoonist ironically mentions the increase in the price of petrol - because it's so unimportant?

I suppose people understood it better at the time - even though Churchill didn't.
