Germania anno zero (1948)
Trailer The ruins of Berlin after war: twelve-year-old Edmund Kohler (Edmund Moeschke) lives with his bedridden father and siblings Eva (Ingetraud Hinze) and Karl-Heinz (Franz-Otto Krüger). The struggling family pretty much relies on Edmund who's trying to find work wherever he can while his adult brother Karl-Heinz refuses to register with the police and get a ration card as he's afraid they might take him to a POW camp because he fought to the very end. One day Edmund meets his former school teacher, Herr Henning (Erich Gühne), who's obviously a pedophile but gives Edmund a chance to make some money by selling the record of a Hitler speech to some Allied soldiers. But Edmund gets something else from the man, namely an advice he takes the wrong way which shall have disastrous consequences for the young man and his family. Germany, Year Zero is part of Roberto Rossellini's "war trilogy". The exterior scenes were filmed on the desolate streets of Berlin, the interior scenes in Rome on a sound stage. Rossellini lost his young son Romano in 1946 and the parallels between him and Edmund are obvious. Less popular than Rome, Open City and Paisan at the time of its release, Germany, Year Zero might very well be the best of the trilogy as it shows the realism aspect of the neorealist perspective in the most intense and daring way. The rubble world of post-war Berlin is a place of not just poverty but moral poverty. Survival is everything and it this world that shapes the young Edmund who thinks that some of his actions serve the greater good until he comes to a bitter conclusion. |

WHITE BOY RICK
It's 1984 the just say no to drugs era but Richard Wershe Jr. AKA WHITE BOY RICK is hoping everyone says yes !! PRAISE : Really outstanding performances from the entire cast with the standouts being : Matthew McConaughey as Richard Wershe Sr. a buy low sell high gun seller,Bel Powley as his strung out daughter Dawn Wershe and Richie Merritt in hi s first role ever as Richard Wershe Jr. Director Yann Demange and writers Andy Weiss,Logan Miller and Noah Miller paint a vivid portrait of the era with stylish moments filled with music and a gritty feel. They also flesh out how life can lead you to take certain steps that paint you into a corner for the rest of your life. The flash and pleasure of fast cash through illegal means and the violence and pain that goes hand in hand with it are prominently displayed in the film..Also the struggle of trying to keep a family together despite impossible odds is shown in several moving scenes. PROBLEMS: The film meanders a bit,but then quickly jumps around making the film feel a bit disjointed. There are some parts of the true story that were only slightly touched on in the film,i would have liked to have seen it play out in a greater way. WHITE BOY RICK is one of those true stories that definitely flew under my radar but im glad i had the pleasure of watching the story on the big screen Scale of 1-10 an 8 WHERE HANDS TOUCH A unique film about the Afro-German persecution during WWII,told through the eyes 16-year-old Leyna (Amandla Stenberg) lonely and alienated, she meets and falls for Lutz (George MacKay), the son of an SS officer (Christopher Eccleston) PRAISE : I saw the trailer for this movie 3 days before i saw it in the theatre and was very interested because i dont think i have ever heard of a film about an African Americans experience in a concentration camp. There have been documentaries about the persecution of non jews in such camps, like PURPLE TRIANGLES:Jehovahs Witnesses, but nothing like this. I thought the cast did a fine job.SStenberg is a very expressive actress capturing all the lonelines and longing of the character. She and MacKay have great chemistrty together. Some scenes of brutality and racism definitely struck an emotional chord in me. PROBLEMS: At times some scenes felt forced.I felt they just didnt ring true and the writers were just pushing for huge emotional moments, with so much melodrama,it took me out of the film. There are other routes they could have taken to have made this more of a solid and satisfying experience. This is the second film i have watched within a week with a backdrop of the Nazi persecution.Operation Finale is a superior film but Where Hands Touch deserves praise for taking on a not much talked about chapter of the era. Scale of 1-10 a 7½ A Boy. A Girl. A Dream Club promoter Cass (Omari Hardwick) meets passer-by Frida aka Free (Meagan Good) sparks fly but is this love a t first sight? PRAISE :Hardwick and Good have great chemistry. The film is beautifully shot.I thought it was an excellent choice to use 2016 U.S. presidential election as a backdrop to the story of two people who have put their dreams on the back burner but are able to ignite the flames of their creative sides as they share their life stories with each other throughout the night. PROBLEMS: Far to many ponderous, stiff and drawn out moments,so many i started to check the clock on my cellphone.10 to 15 minutes definitely could have been shaved off If you like movies like Before Sunrise,Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and Cross My Heart you will definitely enjoy this film Scale of 1-10 a 7½ PREDATOR Yay the Predator is back and i couldnt wai....ahh who am i kidding it's time to put this franchise to bed PRAISE: Some great SFX.Some funny one liners, some good kills, fast paced. The bigger Predator providing some cool body slams. PROBLEMS:I really couldnt attach myself to any of the characters they were amusing at first but their antics ran out of steam fast.I guess i was supposed to accept the choices they made because i think 4 or 5 of them were mentally unstable or something(????) Plot holes bigger than the Grand Canyon.I should have known what i was in store for when even the Predator got in on the antics...i mean...WTF? I like some blended in humor in an action or sci fi flick but everything about this movie was a joke. By the time the last 20 minutes were playing out i was so bored i was more interested in why a family of 5 kept getting out of their seats and leaving the theatre about 4 times.Maybe something more interesting was going on in the lobby. One of the silliest sci fi films ever !! Wastes the talents of all involved. The only way i think this can be enjoyed if you go in thinking this is a comedy SHANE BLACK WHAT HAPPENED???? Scale of 1-10 a 3 |

After watching the only two remaining episodes of the original BBC TV series yesterday I am now watching the Hammer film based on the serial.
The Quatermass Xperiment (1955) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049646/ A rocket crash lands in a remote English field, professor Bernard Quatermass is soon on the scene, it was an experimental rocket putting the first men into space, three men went up but when they open the door there is only one person inside Victor Carroon. Lots of stuff from the orginal series remains but with a far bigger budget. Carroon is taken to the research centre to be examined as his body is showing signs of changes, Quatermass at first ignores advice to take him to a hospital, but after being moved to one Carroon soon escapes and leaves a trail of bodies behind him, meanwhile his body is slowly transforming into something alien https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlygJ9VfhVo https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xennqs

The KGB has been using honeypots for decades to seduce, compromise and blackmail foreign diplomats, intelligence officers, armed service personnel and businessmen and long before Jennifer Lawrence trained to become a honeypot in Red Sparrow, there was this:
Secret Weapons (1985) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089983/ Quote:
Featuring a very young Linda Hamilton and Geena Davis too!! If you Google "Secret Weapons 1985", you will find the entire movie available for free to view on YouTube without needing to log into a Google and/or YouTube account. |

The Parallax View (1974)
Trailer In the three years after the assassination of US Senator Charles Carroll (William Joyce) atop Seattle's Space Needle, a number of witnesses die in odd ways. TV newswoman Lee Carter (Paula Prentiss), a witness herself, visits her ex-boyfriend and fellow journalist, Joe Frady (Warren Beatty), informing him that her life may be in danger but he doesn't take her seriously and Lee ends up dead soon, her death ruled as a drug overdose. Frady starts investigating, beginning with the small town of Salmontail where one of the witnesses, Judge Arthur Bridges, drowned in an "accident". After some problems with the local law enforcement, Frady learns about the Parallax Corporation, an organization that recruits political assassins. The explosion aboard a boat kills its owner, Austin Tucker (William Daniels), Carroll's former aide Frady was interviewing, and his bodyguard. Frady survives but is believed dead. He decides to take advantage of the situation, trying to infiltrate Parallax. Unlike the other two installments of Alan J. Pakula's paranoia trilogy, Klute and All the President's Men, The Parallax View was not nominated for an Academy Award. In my opinion, this is the best of the trilogy. The 1970s spawned a great number of political thrillers, both in America and Europe, inspired by the Kennedy assassination and social upheavals against a number of military dictatorships like those in South America. This is a very good film with the typical bitter ending you'd expect. |

Final Score (2018)... Die Hard at a football match. Nothing new at all in this one. It kills 90 minutes but there's not much you haven't seen before. West Ham supporters might like it for a couple of reason... 1) one more look at Upton Park and 2) the script has them in the semi final of the Champions League (I feel the second of these points may produce many jokes so I shall refrain). Dave Bautista is likeably fine in the lead and the supporting cast are mostly okay. I ddon't get why they brought Pierce Brosnan in for such a small (albeit pivotal to the story) role. He's barely recognisable behind the beard. I have one very disappointed other half about that - she only agreed to watch it because he was in it. All in all... okay but derivative and far from great.

Quatermass 2 (1957)
aka Enemy from Space https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050873/ Again I had watched the original 1950's BBC serial yesterday and I ordered the DVD of the Hammer film based on Nigel Kneale's story. Whilst returning from London Professor Quatermass avoids a swerving car, the passenger had been examining a rock which had split open and something inside had affected him. Back at his base Quatermass hears about a massive fall of meteorites which when examined all appear to have the same shape, which look strangely manufactured rather than natural. Quatermass and his colleague return to Winnerden Flats where the "meteorites" had been falling and find a large plant that looks strangely like his planned moon base which Whitehall had blocked. He is told the plant has been built to manufacture synthetic food but suspects something more sinister is going on and uncovers an alien plot involving senior Government officials and his colleagues at the rocket base find a large object hiding in orbit in outer space and what is inside those 200 feet high cyinders https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCwRzJQ0T7Y

I've always loved westerns and I've been fascinated by the American Civil War for more than 30 years. I thought 1993's Gettysburg was really excellent. Having found out it had a prequel, Gods and Generals, I went in search of that. I have to say it's incredibly disappointing. It is turgid, moves glacially slowly, the characterisation is more about venerating historical figures than understanding them, the dialogue consists of men in large beards making long, sonorous speeches at each other and its depiction of slavery really is problematic. It's a waste of a great cast, who do their best, but they're fighting a really bad script.

Although one thing about 'Gods and Generals' that I did think to be an improvement on 'Gettysburg' was the replacement of Martin Sheen by Robert Duvall as Robert E Lee. Sheen just didn't seem right for the role to me, but Duvall was brilliant. |

Radius. The story of a man who wakes from a car accident with no memories of who he is and then to his horror discovers that anyone who comes with a fifty foot radius of him dies. He meets a woman who has the ability to nullify that effect and apparently was involved in the same accident and is also an amnesiac.
Together they try to discover who they are and what happened that night. The answer is a real shocker! Well worth 90 minutes of your life. |
