Fritz Lang.
On more of "Rancho Notorious" which is already on this thread, "The return of Frank James" (1940, with Henry Fonda & Gene Tierney) and "Western Union" (1941, with Randolph Scott) are 2 great contributions to the U.S Western myth by German director Fritz Lang.

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. That movie has everything - Goodies, Baddies, Cowboys, Indians, a covered wagon, even a thunderstorm, and a surprise happy ending.

I love this film, its about an ordinary guy, pushed to the 'nth' degree.
I can relate to a film like this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fastest_Gun_Alive

Once Upon A Time In The West
Somehow, Leone managed to make a movie that exaggerates to the point of parody almost every Western cliché, even down to stealing dialogue, and yet also at the same time make the perfect Western. Morricone's music has never been bettered, but what's equally amazing is that for the first half hour, there's NO music at all - which makes it all the greater when it finally comes in as the camera pans round to reveal Henry Fonda as the killer. |

but if we're updating our tastes in westerns a little... then any of the Clint Eastwood trilogy spaghetti's, or Unforgiven, or The Quick & The Dead....!!
