Woody's Win10Tip: Block forced Windows updates

You don't have to accept Windows 10 updates as soon as they roll out.
Here's how to take control

Google discloses actively exploited Windows vulnerability

UPDATE: Confirming, based on the comments, that if you have adobes Flash patched, you’re fine.

The current infection vectors require adobes Flash – although Windows itself needs to be patched, to cover an underlying problem - Microsoft patch coming ?

If that sounds obtuse, it is, but patching adobe Flash (or not using adobe Flash!) takes you out of harm’s way. For now.

Default Google: Disclosing vulnerabilities to protect users

From Google:

On Friday, October 21st, we reported 0-day vulnerabilities — previously publicly-unknown vulnerabilities — to Adobe and Microsoft. Adobe updated Flash on October 26th to address CVE-2016-7855; this update is available via Adobe's updater and Chrome auto-update.

After 7 days, per our published policy for actively exploited critical vulnerabilities, we are today disclosing the existence of a remaining critical vulnerability in Windows for which no advisory or fix has yet been released.

This vulnerability is particularly serious because we know it is being actively exploited.
The Windows vulnerability is a local privilege escalation in the Windows kernel that can be used as a security sandbox escape.
It can be triggered via the win32k.sys system call NtSetWindowLongPtr() for the index GWLP_ID on a window handle with GWL_STYLE set to WS_CHILD.
Chrome's sandbox blocks win32k.sys system calls using the Win32k lockdown mitigation on Windows 10, which prevents exploitation of this sandbox escape vulnerability.

We encourage users to verify that auto-updaters have already updated Flash — and to manually update if not — and to apply Windows patches from Microsoft when they become available for the Windows vulnerability.

At Microsoft, they did not like it at all, of course, and Terry Myerson was asked to respond in a blog wich I will not impose on you because it says nothing new.

Default Microsoft and science fiction

According to an article written by John Markoff for the New York Times:
Microsoft Spends Big to Build a Computer Out of Science Fiction

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/21/te...uter.html?_r=1

I am doubtful.
They even cannot achieve a decent OS, but they hope to build a quantum computer when IBM is still at it with a prototype that is not ready to work.

I would prefer they finish Windows 10.

Big Grin A question from a noob to Windows10.

Good day gents. I hope all is well in your corners of the World.

With much reluctance, I recently purchased a new Win10 box to replace my tried, and true XP machine (I know, I know ).

Just wondering if there's a way to revert back to the XP style of opening folders without the Win10 "file explorer" view? In other words, I don't want to see the drop down, explorer tree on the left if at all possible.

TIA.

It is a way to admit mistakes.

Are you surprised ?

It is a non-news, isn't it ?

I tried to apply the 1607 update last night. Eight hours later, the installation was still... doing something.

At the risk of bricking my laptop, I forced it to stop. When I restarted, I got the message "Reverting to your previous version of Windows". Hallelujah!

I quickly set my WiFi to "metered connection".

I'll try again sometime. Maybe it will work next time.
