WinDoze "Updates!"?????
A few weeks back, I was putting my laptop on standby, when I noticed the W**doze icon saying I had "updates ready for my computer." I didn't click on them, just put my laptop on stand by. The day after, I noticed that the Win icon had gone, along with the message. A couple of days after that, I tried to upload a pic from my digi camera...NO JOY. In the end, I found that these "updates" have completely deleted my digi camera, my DVD / CD Rom drive, my sound, my external DVD/CD Rom drivers. I am still using Win XP. Any suggestions to get it back to normal? I tried system restore, but that only takes me as far as when the "issues" started!

Have you checked your update history to see if the updates were actually applied? It sounds more like an XP issue rather than updates. I ran XP until recently when the power supply on my laptop died and can't recall anything like this. Crashes and so on are routine but not deleting third party software.
This is a good place for identifying updates that might cause problems: http://www.askwoody.com/ Regards 40+

I found out that loads of stuff was disabled. Reactivated some of them, and now it's fine. Thanks for your comments and trying to help. Appreciate it.

I note that Microsoft released an 'emergency' update yesterday (for all versions of Windows) to fix some 'hole' to do with fonts which was open to exploitaion. This was of course out-of-sync with its usual bunch of monthly updates. And it took an age to update via that usual 3-stage process, I was sat staring at a black screen with the hard-drive light flashing away for ages .....

I'm currently running Windows 8.1 and received a pop-up from Microsoft a couple of weeks ago asking if I wanted to "reserve" a copy of Windows 10 that is going to be released by the end of July.
I checked "yes" and received a confirmation e-mail. I will be notified when it is ready for download but am not obligated to download and install it. Is this a bad idea? |

http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t29...indows-10.html Go through it, but, from my opinion, Win 10 is nowhere near ready for the average user to use. My only suggestion, if you try Win 10, is to install it on a separate drive so that if you don't like Win 10 you should be able to go back to 8.1. |
