The Hook and Hatchet, Hucking, Kent.

The cat looked a lot like this: except that it was male, and called 'Boss' because basically he was! A friendly and amiable moggie but he was most definitely doing you a favour by letting you tickle him behind the ear. Haven't been there for a while now and poor old Bossy is with the celestial moggies now, but this is a damn good place for a ride out on a warm sunny day. |

Arrrgghhhh!
My God, you guys make me sick! The last bar I went to here in picturesque South Georgia is called PJ's. Real nice decor, it's got real 1/4 inch paneling from Home Depot on the walls, and a bar that some guy named Gator made from spare construction lumber. They have Budweiser, and of course, Corona, for those special occasions. No liquor, but you can bring in your own bottle for $5. Lots of pool tables, and don't those poolsticks make handy weapons? I think they have karaoke on some damn night, which you'll really love if you like hearing drunkass rednecks trying to sing George Strait. But the real entertainment usually occurs on Friday and Saturday nights, when they have fights in the parking lot, usually followed by an appearance by the Police. No, not with Sting, I mean the sheriff's department. Someone please kill me...

I can't believe I forgot to mention this one
The Scotch Piper at Lydiate (about 9 miles north of Liverpool) The pub was built around an oak tree in the 14th century (I think some of the wooden beams have been dated to the mid 16th century). The story is that during the 1745 rebellion, Bonnie Prince Charlie's troops passed through & left a piper there to recover from his injuries (IMHO they were probably sick of him always playing the bloody bagpipes & shot him themselves) & he stayed on & married the landlord's daughter. After that the pub was renamed from it's original name The Royal Oak & it's been The Scotch Piper ever since. It's a step back in time - no jukebox, TV or fruit machines and outside toilets (it makes the place less popular with women in winter). IIRC they installed beer pumps sometime in the late 1990s, before that all beer was pulled direct from the barrel & served from a jug. Apparently they didn't even have mains electricity until the 1950s. I used to do a lot of rambling (that's walking in the countryside if you didn't know) & I led a few walks in the area - the Piper was always the "lunch stop". One time, we had to cut the walk short due to driving freezing snow & we spent a pleasant hour or so crowded round the fire drinking & gently steaming - after a while no-one was bothered about the cancelled walk. Another little story - My brother was in there once with a couple of friends & one of them asked the landlord "What food is on the menu" The landlord looked round & said "We've got ready salted or salt & vinegar" I'm not too sure about that - I seem to remember thay had a jar of pickled eggs as well but they could have been almost as old as the building. If you're in the area it's well worth a visit. |

The real ales are good. Ignore the landlord (if you can), he's a complete fruitloop! |

Time for another one of my favourites:-
The Star Inn at Harome. www.thestaratharome.co.uk This pub, in a village about 2 miles East of Helmsley in North Yorkshire dates from the 14th century. It is a beautiful thatched building, very low and atmospheric inside and every stick of furniture is by 'Mousey' Thompson (his trademark was a carved mouse on all his furrniture) including the bar itself. A fantastic array of real ales available, and the wine list is one of the best I've seen. It is run by one of the countrys top chefs and the food is expensive but really worth it.

A1A Ale Works
(I love Monterey, cloq, and know a few bars there, too.) Anyway, once in a while we head on down to beautiful St. Augustine, Florida, oldest city in the US. It's about three hours away, and the first place we stop at to have lunch, and a beer, is the A1A Ale House. You can sit on the balcony, overlooking the old market square, and the Bridge of Lions. They make their own beers, on the premises, and offer an eclectic menu of foods, Carribean, Spanish, and such. (God, I wish I was there now!) Anyway, great beers, they make specials for different seasons. But I like the Red Brick Ale, which actually had some red brick powder in it to give it's color!
