I have never smoked despite being brought up living in a pub and all my family smoking. I think it just sends you one way or the other. It was the smell of stale smoke and full ash trays that put me off. Especially helping out in a morning by clearing them into a metal box and cleaning the ash tray with a brush. I can almost wretch now at that terrible odour!!!
I was happy for the ban in the UK. It's much more pleasant having a drink or a meal in a smoke free environment. I don't mind people smoking, that is still their perogative but I would rather not smell it.

I have lost two young family members-both in their 30s - to smoking. They each left a small child. That's when the theoretical damage it causes becomes real. It's stupid, ugly and damaging.

I've never smoked....tried it once when I was about 12 and thought.....this tastes like shite after coughing until I thought my lungs would fall out....never really felt any peer pressure either....hey if you want to waste your money on burning leaves, lose all sense of taste and smell like a stokers armpit that's fine by me but I'll stand downwind thanx. Indifferent to the ban.....I used to avoid fuggy smoke filled places anyway.
My favourite smoking quote tho' is from Blackadder "I only smoke after making love.....I'm a 20 a day man"

I used to work with a guy who was a chain smoker. After the ban on smoking in the workplace was introduced, he was nipping out for a fag every twenty minutes or so. He was always having really severe coughing fits as I remember and was taken away in an ambulance a couple of times. He must have been a sixty a day man which would cost thirty quid a day now or £210 a week! Surely, at that price he must've cut down by now.

When I went to San Diego Mesa Junior College back in the early 70s, I took a beginning psychology course and the instructor was a psychologist with a masters degree, in his 40s. he had to teach from the back corner of the room so he could smoke a cigarette while teaching - pathetic...
