This Bf109G-6 (W.Nr 160756) was flown to an American airfield in Italy in 1944 by is pilot, René Darbois, a French Alsacian who joined the Luftwaffe to learn flying with the objective of escaping occupied France. After instruction at JG 103 in France and EJG 1 in Germany, he joined the I./JG4 at Maniago, Italy, and deserted during a ferry mission on the 25th July 1944. The plane was stripped to bare metal, tested in the US, and survives in Washington DC in the Smithsonian. It was repainted in differing markings because at the time they had no idea what the original markings were. A recent 1/48 kit by Eduard has these markings included.

Lucky for me I live in a large metro area, so I have several "hobby shops" to choose from. Sadly, the ones that were plastic or plastic/RR centered have closed, so what remains are R/C shops that have plastic. (At least I can get paint)
Otherwise it is use EBay/Amazon or online biggies like Squadron Mail Order, Lotsokits, Sprue Brothers, CultTVMan, Hobby Link Japan, Lucky Model, etc. And depending on location and time of year, there is usually an IPMS day convention, regional or even National. The Nationals are usually tagged as "World's Biggest Hobby Shop". The UK Nationals held in Telford around Nov 10-12 are pretty awesome too. There is a huge amount of web sites to see what is new or forthcoming. Some even have surveys that are requested by the plastic model companies to see what is desired. Finescale Modeler also does these surveys. Hyperscale, Cybermodeler, The Modeling News, CultTVMan (fantasy/scifi), Modeling Madness, Perth Military Modeling Site (PMMS) (armor), Aircraft Resource Center. And there are dozens of Facebook pages, some run by fans, others by the firms large and small. Usually the other guys in my IPMS chapter will ask if someone wants to join in on an overseas order to save shipping, so that works as well.

HMS Exeter 1/350 Trumpeter
HMS Exeter - and as promised , some sprue shots , impressed with the model - it has quite a decent etch set and above all , anchor chain is supplied ( so you don't need to scrape any plastic raised ' anchor chain ' off the deck , like you normally needed to - also the level of accuracy and attention to detail is impressive . I was also VERY impressed that they give you etch ' binoculars ' to fold and assemble on the Upper Bridge , plus etch Funnel cap grilles , to point out two good points . I noted the propeller struts have the number of correct struts braces ( 2 for each shaft ) unlike the HMS Repulse , so it seems that the Trumpeter ' A Team were involved in the details , and also the Model comes with a one piece Hull , so its not waterline friendly ( not a big deal to me ) but will make the task of making the Hull so much more easier ( no ship hull halves to assemble ) Seems like a Lovely Model , frankly . This is a model in injected plastic ( 1/700 scale sadly ) that I thought would never appear ! This Fujimi 1:700-scale kit has been a best seller in Japan, and it caught my attention on the Hobby Link Japan website during repeated visits. The Amagi class was a series of four battlecruisers planned for the Imperial Japanese Navy as part of the so-called Eight-eight fleet. The ships were to be named Amagi, Akagi, Atago, and Takao; the first three were named for mountains (Mount Amagi, Mount Akagi and Mount Atago), while the fourth was named for the town of Takao, Formosa (present-day Kaohsiung, Taiwan). The Amagi design was essentially an enlarged version of the Tosa-class battleship, but with a thinner armored belt and deck and a modified secondary battery arrangement. Limitations imposed by the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty prevented the class from being completed as designed. However, the treaty had a limited allowance for hulls already under construction to be converted into aircraft carriers. Amagi and Akagi were both intended for conversion, but an earthquake damaged the hull of Amagi so extensively that the ship was scrapped. |

Latest Releases from Trumpeter
This is the Highlights ( in 1/350 scale and 1/200 Scale )
from the new 2019 Trumpeter ( of China ) Model Catalogue which they revealed last night on Facebook , as a sneak peak I have added arrows and text to the pictures to show exactly where the new ships have appeared - note the highlights are Cruisers HMS Exeter ( released already ) and her sister York, Kent and Cornwall ( 3 Funnel - County Class ) . 2 Russian destroyers in 1/350 scale ( Tashkent Class ) Bismarck, Tirpitz, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau Note - the new 2019 Bismarck and Tirpitz to rival the old Tamiya 1980's Models (Academy has a 1/350 Bismarck which is a superior Model to the Tamiya is a surprising revelation . Also note , For Italian Ship Fans , you finally will get the Vittorio Veneto and Littorio Battleships to complete the line up of the Ship Class ( the Roma was released in 2012 - but differed from the 2 earlier ships in that she was given a longer bow and given extra sheer ( or rise of the bow ) as the 2 earlier ships were ' wet ' at speed in seas . So the Roma 1/350 Model has a different Bow to the other 2 ships which hopefully Trumpeter have revised and altered for the new Moulds . Note in 1/200 Scale , we get the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau ! Wasn't it agreed on an earlier post that the Swiss paint scheme was the ugliest used on a Me 109?
http://www.hyperscale.com/features/2...6swissws_1.htm A model kit that now comes to mind was a 1/72nd scale Hurricane from Revell that I made when I was around ten. The model was made of light blue plastic, I barely had the money for the model and glue, did not even think about painting it and of course the end result was a piece of crap. However it was my piece of crap and I was devastated when I broke it playing with it like it was a toy. It was one of the firsts of my pieces of crap and I didn't get appreciably better with time. |

Heck no! I love the Swiss schemes, esp the one squadron that added a sharkmouth.

A few years ago, I was visiting my cousin and decided to bring each of his children a toy. I decided on a model for each of his boys. One was a snap together car (for the youngest), but for his older brother I got a model of a V22 Osprey.. I gotta say, that one looked hard!
