The best hotel in San-Fransisco is a youth hostel in the middle of federal land. From the gardens of the yourhostel you have a view at the golden gate bridge and Alcatraz. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=usa+sa...mason&t=m&z=14 http://sfhostels.com/fishermans-wharf/ As for transportation: USE public transport. A car is of no use in san fransisco and almost everything can be done on foot or bus. One more tip on Alcatraz. Try to buy your ticketsa 2-3 WEEKS in advance. That thing is sometimes sold of for 2 weeks. |

Just my two cents':
Stay away from Fisherman's Wharf. Its the most "tourist-y", dirtiest, least "San Francisco" part of the town. The tour out to Alcatraz is fun, but Fisherman's Wharf has the generic "tourist trap" stuff you see around the country (a sure clue: the "Bubba Gump Shrimp Company" -- wherever there's one of those, you know you're in the "Zona Turistica") One of the things about San Francisco is that its got the best city park in the US-- Golden Gate park, which stretches down to the ocean and a terrific beach. NB: The hostel that linux mentions above is not actually at Fisherman's Wharf, and that's a good thing in my book-- Fort Mason is terrific. I haven't stayed at the place, but the location is fine. |

The best place I went to on a vacation from work was Oahu, in the Hawaiian Islands. This was in 1983. I stayed for two weeks at the hotel known as the Sheraton Hawaiian. I saw all the best sites such as the Arizona Memorial, the Punchbowl Memorial Cemetary of the Pacific where many of the war veterans are buried. There are thousands of grave sites. I also visited all these rather interesting malls especially made for the tourists such as The International Marketplace where anyone can buy goods from all over the Pacific and Orient. I also visited all these strange malls. One looked like it was British with cobblestone walkways and security people dressed as English soldiers with these bright red tunics worn by British soldiers in the 1800's. I also went to a lot of bars and taverns that were situated on various beaches, in hotels, and even under hotels. And I visited some of the local supermarkets to marvel at items never seen in the continental U.S.. I also visited what was then considered to be the largest mall in the world: Ala Moana mall with 180 stores. Just a few years later Woodfield Mall in the Cook County City of Schaumburg was recognized as the largest mall with 280 stores. Now in the U.S there is one mall that is supposed to have over 1,000 stores, but I don't know where it is. It was a great vacation spot. It also has some rather large garden spots that are similar in size to forest preserves here in the continental U.S. I think everyone once in their life should visit any of the seven islands that make up Hawaii.
It is interesting that my late father was stationed in Hawaii during and after World War 2 and he said that back then there were only a handful of hotels there and none of the glitzy touristy spots that exist today. It was only decades after the war that The Hawaiian Islands became such a great tourist spot. |

My Dream Vacations
I am a fisherman and a photographer.
For fishing: 1) Trout fishing on the Kamchatka Peninsula. 2) The Amazon fishing for multiple species. I love the TV show River Monsters and would love to spend some time fishing the rivers of S. America. It would be a blast to spend a day fishing for Piranha with light (2lbs. test) tackle. 3) A three week long range trip on one of the boats out San Diego, going south. For photography: 1) A traditional African Safari. I like shooting wildlife. 2) The Amazon. 3) Alaska to shoot bears. 4) S. Africa to shoot a Great White breaching the water. I would also love to get in a shark cage and shoot a Great White underwater.
