There are huge issues in the English game at the moment, firstly iy is nowhere near as wealthy at the highest level as many think. The only Premiership Club that trades at a profit is Exeter. Partly because of far sighted investment, partly because of huge investment in talent, they both have an academy and have close ties with Colleges and clubs throughout the South West, closer than most because the coaches at these outposts are working directly with the academy coaches, thus being up to date with both coaching technique and the club philosophy, allowing young players to integrate at academy level seamlessly, they have done fairly well in producing a series of International players, and a strong squad with few imports.
The ridiculous idea of 'Ring Fencing' the Premiership' is another point. How can it be for the benefit of the game? We saw the fall ion standards in Wales, the international side dropped alarmingly, because the top clubs spent too much time playing each other, I played against Cardiff five times in one season! But there are two big worries, firstly with no chance of promotion, the Championship sides will cease to invest in both players and infrastructure, sides like the Cornish Pirates, who have produced a fair few internationals, including currently Sam Matavesi the Fiji hooker who took part in the monumental beating of France in Paris a few weeks ago, and are currently planning to be part of the 'Stadium for Cornwall' Project involving some £20m investment, surely this is the futue of the game? Wealthy investors with sensible plans? By the way the passed plans include conference and hotel and leisure facilities. The other thing is the threat of a breakaway Premiership, interesting point here. If the RFU refuse to recognise the breakaway, does that mean that their players are not playing under the auspice of a recognised union? Therefore were are they placed for availability for test Rugby? Surely they are out on their ears? That really is going to go down well with the players! I think it is obvious from the above whet my views are! |

I wish I knew they are useless in Europe, the thing is Baxter is a proven coach and perhaps it is to do with the players having a mental win the league bugger all else attitude? Bit of perspective for you from my days, the very start of the European Cups, we would have been playing Cardiff in the Quarter finals, but we had an All Black fixture on the same day, so they gave us the choice, we all wanted to play the blicks, thankfully we got knocked out before the Quarter, wether by accident or design I know not!!!

I think Exeter Chiefs have only been in the European Competitions 3 years. In fact they have only been in the Premiership 8 years or so. It took a while to become established in the Premiership and will take a while in Europe with different competition, mini-leagues and importance of points difference plus the traveling.
It takes while to get the experience of what to expect especially in away games. If we go back to when English football teams were banned from Europe for 5 years at the beginning of the 1990s, it took years before any English team became good enough to do well because they had fallen so far behind and didn't have the experience required. With regard to a breakaway Premiership, I haven't read about it but I can see the pros and cons. I would say though that a lot of Premiership players would not be so interested in playing international rugby as once was the case.eg veterans dropped from the test team in NZ or Aust, a lot of Pacific Island players or SA players excluded by the quota system. |

The shocking fact is that Gloucester as a county is bigger than Leinster,The English Clubs changed the rules for the HCUP[Imjust using that name to save typing]and Wasps rested players for their game ,are the English teams committed to this tournament or not?
The English Clubs got a windfall of money from the TV revenue and blew it away on single marque players if he gets injured ,they are weakend greatly they put no investment in local talent hence my opening comment. If you cast a casual eye on Leinster they have none of the wealth compared to England and France but if you are a young guy with talent you will get a chance to play their academy breeds ambition and promotes youth .I think its a cardinal sin for clubs to blow their budget on overseas old fellas looking for a retirement fund and ignoring/not promoting the talent/the game within your area
