Today's winner is the bird known as the Cardinal, aka as the northern cardinal and the redbird. This bird is not only the state bird of Illinois, but the state bird of five other Midwestern states in the U.S. It is larger than a sparrow but slightly smaller than a robin. I saw one just a few days ago. It is rarely seen in residential areas, but is more commonly seen in woodland areas. It feeds on the ground. It prefers to eat small seeds, but it will also feed on insects, fruit, and it will even feed on the sap that runs down some trees. The male bird is completely covered with red feathers, except for an area around the face which is black colored. It is often recognized by a tuft of feathers on the top of its head that appears as a crown. It's song is quite unusual. The cardinal makes two tones and then three click -like tones. |

On April 14, 1960, the Montreal Canadiens defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup for a record fifth year in a row. The Canadiens reached the Stanley Cup Finals after sweeping the Chicago Blackhawks in four games, while the Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings, four games to two. The championship series began on April 7, 1960, with a 4-2 victory for the Canadiens, also known as the Habs. (Habs is short for Les Habitants, a term dating back to the 17th century that refers to the French settlers in what is now Quebec.) Game 2 of the series also went to the Canadiens, 2-1, as did Game 3, with a final score of 5-2. On April 14, the Canadiens shut out the Maple Leafs, 4-0, to sweep the series and take home their fifth Stanley Cup championship in a row. No other team in hockey had ever won five straight Stanley Cups and the record still stands today. After the Canadiens’ victory, one of their star players, Maurice “Rocket” Richard, the first man to score 50 goals in 50 games (in the 1944-1945 season) and the first to score 500 career goals, retired. My grandfather (left) with the Stanley Cup, after doing a repair to it, at Molson Breweries Vancouver. (c. 1962)

Albert Einstein once theorized that there might be different dimensions where alternate Earth's existed. The history of these alternate Earth's might be radically different. Here we have an Earth where cavemen existed at the same time as dinosaurs. This particular Earth was not hit by a great asteroid, so the dinosaurs did not become extinct, but they died off after a few million more years from a massive climate change. These dinosaurs had a limited intelligence and could actually think. Here we have Marvin the T. Rex taking his morning walk. Damn these awful little creatures! Every day on my walk they are here with their little pointed sticks trying to hurt me, but because I'm so much larger than they are I just stomp on them and then eat them, although they are quite awful. Their meat is so stringy. The hunting is much better further on my walk. There I can chase down the Gallimimus who really taste good or feast on a Stegosaurus, or on a bunch of Velociraptors, after first tearing them to pieces! |
