Woody Strode 1914-1994 6'4", Sometimes menacing, always imposing and dignified presence in dozens of movies. All-American Football player and UCLA teammate of Jackie Robinson and Kenny Washington (who, with Strode, was one of 4 blacks to break the NFL color line, as Robinson did with Baseball), world class decathlete, Pro-Wrestler ('rassled' Gorgeous George!), WWII U.S. Army veteran. His screen credits include "Spartacus", "The Ten Commandments", "The Professionals", John Ford's "Man Who Shot Liberty Valence", and "Sgt. Rutledge" (about a black trooper accused of rape) in which he had the title role)... ...and one of my favorites, though his appearance is brief: Sergio Leone's "Once Upon A Time In the West"... where, as he and two other heavies swelter in the hot sun awaiting the arrival of a train, he moves under a water tower, and drops begin to fall into the brim of his hat. When it's full, he takes it off and drinks... So unexpected, and so cool! (and probably spontaneously thought up on the spot by Strode or the director) |

If you're a fan of Woody Strode you should see "Sergeant Rutledge." A remarkable little film directed by Strode's friend John Ford. The film features some nice work by Jeffery Hunter.

Michael Caine always made a very effective tough guy, although actually his acting range was and is much wider than people realised for a long time. Lord Olivier cited the staircase scene in Sleuth as a good example of Michael Caine displaying his full acting range. But here, meeting Ian Hendry as Eric Paice at Newcastle Racecourse in the 1971 film, Get Carter, we see Michael Caine's aura of calm menace.
