Chariots of Fire (1981).
Not Everyone will agree with me here i'm sure, but i found this film when i saw it at the cinema when it came out to be a Snoozefest maybe now i'm a lot older i may appreciate it more but i doubt it, so slow so boring the Academy has a lot to answer for giving this best picture.

You feel the same way about Chariots Of Fire as I feel about:
The Wizard Of Oz I have never seen Chariots Of Fire, by the way. When it came out at the theaters in 1981, I was 16 and it didn't pick my interest then and it still hasn't. |

A second look

However, since then, I've seen it several times, and I've grown to appreciate it. Whether or not it deserved the Oscar is hard to say, but I can now understand why it was a highly acclaimed film. Last edited by Navvet; January 24th, 2019 at 07:34 PM.. Reason: text correction |

Chariots of Fire may not reside in the upper echelons of film history but it's far from boring and the Vangelis soundtrack accompanies it in just the right way.
And to say that you can't relate to a foreign film because you're of a certain nationality is not what I'd call an opinion. As an Austrian/European, I can't relate to the characters in US films either but this doesn't mean that the films are bad or uninteresting. There's a shitload of films I consider garbage but I'll keep it at just one this time: |

At the time, Chariots of Fire displayed the acting talents of a group of British actors who were unknown in the US. After a while, I actually started getting some of the characters confused. Also, the movie was about an event of which I knew nothing, and about people I'd never heard of, and which had occurred sixty years earlier. As I said, now that I've seen it a number of times, I've grown to enjoy it much more than I originally did. Below is the actual finish of the real race. |

I'm glad there is differing views on Chariots of Fire everyone has a different view on certain films it's just the way i remember it i was 25 when i saw it now i'm nearly 63 it may need another viewing but i agree with others the Vangelis music was excelent.
A little note it wasn't a stellar year for nominees the others for best picture were. Raiders of the Lost Ark Atlantic City Reds On Golden Pond.

Prophecy (1979) A log company's waste mutates the environment, creating a giant killer bear-monster.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079758/ the only waste created was the time spent watching this joke of a horror movie

Kenneth McKellar always reckoned that Vangelis ripped off his signature song For These Are My Mountains for the Chariots theme and I have to agree with him (a bit)
