I am a huge fan of sad songs. (they say so much, ooh la la... I'm sure that somebody will get that reference

Written by Fred Neil, who recorded a jolly fine version himself, the song takes on a numinous quality when performed by the incomparable Tim Buckley.

You wouldn't think it to hear the instrumentals, but this is one of the saddest songs I know. I first heard it about 40 years ago.

Written by Lou Reed in 1972 and originally released on his album Transformer and as the b-side of the single Walk On The Wild Side.

Walk On The Wild Side, which chronicles the lives of various degenerates who peopled Andy Warhol's "Factory" was certainly a controversial single which, apparently, introduced the general populace to fellatio. However, nowadays, it seems trivial compared to the little gem on the other side, which is an absolute masterpiece of dissemblance, denial and irony.

So, what could be remotely sad about a perfect day, I hear you ask yourselves? Well, just listen to the combination of the beautiful, stately dirge-like melody, Lou's resigned and despairing vocals and tell-tale lines, such as:
"I thought I was some one else, some one good"
"You're going to reap just what you sow"
and you'll realise that things are far from as perfect as you may have first thought.

Lou, alas, departed from this mortal coil on October 27, 2013, and, since then, this song, above all his other fine compositions, has become especially poignant for me.

Thank you, everyone. You have restored my belief that good music does still exist and is still listened to. I would love to know who these companies pole for their results. I don't believe it id people like us though.
