how could i forget.......... add Mick Miller & Bob Monkhouse to my previous list, please..!!! d'oh!!! (homer moments getting more frequent as i get older)
Mick was hilarious; funnier than on stage; and had some great stories of his great pal Bernard Manning, and his clapped out Cadillac's............. While Bob was equally welcoming, and his act bluer than you'd imagine...... I was lucky to have been part of a large social club's ent's committee to have met them both; offering to take bob's preferred brand of expensive scotch to him just to get to say "hello". sad loss. didn't meet anyone else worth mentioning which is why i'd forgotten until now.... (comedy duo, Little & Large don't count; their off stage arrogance was as big, as their on stage act was poor)

I used to own a Limousine and Taxicab company for the first 5 years of the 2000's.
One night I got dispatched to a call to pick up a lady in her early 30's in the suburb outside of the main metro area. She turned out to be a famous Academy Award nominated/winning actress and she ended up hiring me to drive her around town in one of my Taxicabs for a week . I even accompanied her to night clubs and shopping with her at the Galleria sort of a personal bodyguard/chaperone. She was by herself, she just wanted to get out of the house without the fanfare and the crowd attracting attention of the limousine and her entourage/bodyguards, etc No one recognized her at the night clubs (I even danced with her since no one asked her to dance or even talk to her); but she was recognized at the Galleria after we were there for about 1 hour. She ended up signing a handful of photograph before we had to run for our lives with the mall security as protection so we could get back to the parking garage. Other famous people I picked up/drove around in my Taxicabs or Limousines: Mary Lou Retton 2 Members of ZZ Top (I don't know which ones out of the 3, they all have long beards) Chloe Jones Famous people I met: all 34 Bikini Clad Victoria's Secret Angels in 2009 in Miami Beach |

In 1989 I had the misfortune to meet Sarah Ferguson - Ginger Fergie. She was opening a new shopping centre near where I lived. I happened to be standing by the guard-rail when she emerged from the limo and the first 'normal' person she shook hands with was me. God, she was ugly.

Oh wait... are we just talking about Famous people in general or only those in show business?
I was a volunteer on the Reagan re-election team in 1984 and a volunteer for Bush Sr. in 1988. I've met Reagan and Bush Sr. I've shook their hands. I even have a framed plague signed by Reagan recognizing me for the hard work and dedication I provided to his re-election campaign. |

Living and working in DC, I have met hundreds of famous people. I have met presidents, vice-presidents, congressmen (and women), cabinet officers, ambassadors, military attaches, actors, actresses, musicians, world cup winners, olympic gold medalists, etc... and ad nauseum. Everybody comes to or through DC at some point and you practically trip over them sometimes. However, there are a few moments that have stayed with me:
Giving a light for Johan Cruyff's cigarette (which he had bummed off of my buddy). Sharing a table at a diner with Joan Jett and two of her band members. Meeting Donna Edmondson (Playboy Playmate) and her incredible breasts. Being entertained by Red Skelton at National Airport. The last especially is memorable for me. I had watched Red Skelton growing up and had always been a fan. I don't remember where he was flying to but he refused the offer of a private lounge to wait in and insisted on sitting at the gate with everybody else. He then spent the next hour chatting with people, signing autographs, doing skits, telling jokes, and entertaining the travelers and workers around him. It just brightened everybody's day. |

Met half the Python team, got a book signed by Micheal Palin, bumped into Burt Reynolds and the actor who plays Quark in DS9 at a memroabilia fair in 2004, somehow held back the urge to shout "Gordons Alive" when seeing Melody Anderson at the same fair.

The brother's an actor so I've met a fair few down the years often in social situations including most of the "murphia" Liam Neeson, Ciaran Hinds, James Nesbitt and that Daniel Day fellow they keep giving oscars to. I've usually found actors to be pleasant and civil company.
Most Rock'n'Roll fans of my age will have met a fair amount of musicians. Mine goes back to 79/80 when as keen young fanzine writer I sneaked backstage at the Ulster Hall to cop an interview with the Bass player of Siouxie & The Banshees. Ah the glamour! A few encounters stand out, a lovely drunken conversation with Steve Marriott being one; John Martyn and Andy Partridge of XTC were memorable too. Actually the only real arseholes i've known have been politicians, no surprise there. |
