Anzac day Collingwood v Essendon

History of Collingwood–Essendon Anzac Day clash

The modern version of the Anzac Day clash was conceived by then Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy while pottering in his garden in the mid-90s.Sheedy, who had done two years service in the army after being drafted to Richmond in 1969, thought back to the success of the Collingwood–Richmond game in 1977, and considered how the football on Anzac Day could pay suitable tribute to those who had served their country.Sheedy organised a meeting with officials from Essendon and Collingwood, and the then Victorian Returned and Services League (RSL) President Bruce Ruxton, who was also a keen Collingwood supporter, and proposed his concept for the match day and game which would honour the Anzac spirit.Despite their previous opposition to football on Anzac Day, Ruxton and the RSL agreed with Sheedy's proposal, as did the AFL.

The first annual Anzac Day match between Collingwood and Essendon was played on Tuesday, 25 April 1995 at the MCG. The round-four match received limited publicity as there had already been AFL matches played on 25 April. Essendon had won its first three games of the season, however, Collingwood were without a victory. Soon after the Anzac Day march in the city, patrons flocked to the ground. Crowds outside the ground were so substantial at 12.30 pm, that Collingwood coach Leigh Matthews thought the gates to the ground must have still been locked. When the gates were closed at 1.30 pm—still 40 minutes before the start of the match—20,000 additional people had to be dispersed by mounted police, while they attempted to gain admission into the stadium. Thousands of these people descended to the nearby Fitzroy Gardens, where they listened to the match on radio.

Played on a sunny autumn day, both teams kicked six goals in the first quarter. Before a three-goal-to-one second quarter helped Essendon lead by 16-points at half-time. However, the momentum swayed in the third-quarter, when Collingwood kicked seven-goals-to-two, giving them a 14-point lead at the break. Essendon started strongly in the final term, and when James Hird snapped a goal late in the quarter, he gave his team a six point advantage. Saverio "Sav" Rocca leapt and took "one of the marks of the year" in the forward-line soon after. At the 28-minute mark he capitalised by kicking the goal and levelling the scores. With just seconds left, Nathan Buckley had an opportunity to score; however, he elected to kick to Rocca, who was cut off. Seconds later, the siren sounded; both team's score on 111. Roars from the 94,825 crowd during the match could easily be heard from a kilometre away; and the crowd remains the second-highest home and away crowd in VFL/AFL history, surpassed only by the 99,346 who attended the Collingwood–Melbourne Queen's Birthday clash in 1958.

Collingwood has downed Essendon by a point in a gripping Anzac Day contest at the MCG, surviving a last quarter comeback to collect the four points

COLLINGWOOD has won its third consecutive Anzac Day clash over arch-rival Essendon, outlasting the Bombers by a point in a gripping contest at the MCG on Wednesday afternoon.

Inspired by Anzac medallist Dane Swan's 42 possessions and three goals, the Pies led at every change before surviving an incredible late comeback by Essendon to record a 11.14 (80) to 11.13 (79) victory.

Talking points: Collingwood v Essendon

Collingwood saw an 18-point lead early in the last quarter wiped out after Essendon kicked three consecutive goals, the third of them a set shot after a mark in the goalsquare by Alwyn Davey that levelled the scores inside the last four minutes.

Brent Stanton, who had been tagged out of the game by Martin Clarke, looked to have won the game for the Bombers when his snap with two minutes to go found the mark, but Jarryd Blair's soccered goal with 90 seconds to play proved the difference.

Blair's kick from inside the goalsquare required a video review before being confirmed, and Essendon made several desperate forays into their attacking 50 before the siren sounded.

Essendon coach James Hird said he was proud of his players despite the Bombers' first loss for the season.

"I think we came up against a very good opposition … they're a terrific side and they came to play today, and at certain times played a lot better than us," Hird said.

Fittingly, the game ended with Swan holding the ball on the city side wing.

The 18th head-to-head meeting between the teams on Anzac Day was a scrappy, hard-fought game where goals were initially hard to come by.

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said during the week it would take a big effort from all players to last the game, given both sides played just four days ago.

After a first half where the tackling ferocity did not reflect 44 players who entered the game under physical duress, both sides were clearly exhausted as the game wore on.

Michael Hibberd, who was the Bombers' highest possession-getter in the first term, was subbed out minutes before quarter-time with a hamstring injury that is expected to sideline him for three weeks.

The Pies burned opportunities in the first quarter, recording 19 inside 50s for just two goals.

Goals remained hard to come by in the second term after it took the Pies just four minutes for Cloke to stretch their lead to 14 points with his first.

The Pies' backline remained on top until half-time, with Lachlan Keeffe and Nathan Brown standing strong against Patrick Ryder and Stuart Crameri.

But it was Clarke who was arguably the Pies' most important player, and not for the number of times he collected the ball.

Clarke had eight possessions to half time while Stanton - who has averaged 29 touches in the first four rounds - had two.

The Bombers deployed Heath Hocking to Scott Pendlebury (34 touches) but the move wasn't as successful.

With Hocking occupied, Swan was largely free and had 42, with 32 of those to three-quarter time. He also had a remarkable 13 clearances.

In his post-match press conference, Buckley said Brown's performance was excellent on the back of two knee injuries.

"There were times when I reckon blokes around him, even though he stayed positive, that would have [thought], 'Gee, your knee's not looking great', or 'You're not moving that well'," Buckley said.

"He's stuck to his task. It was a great first-up reward for him and now there's work to do."

We used to be able to watch Aussie Rules Football here in the US and I would always watch. But the last time it was on tv here was about 2 years ago I think. I really wish it would come back.

At least we do get to see Aussie V8 Supercars here on a week tape delay on SpeedTV. I think it is one of the finest touring car series in the world.

Unfortunately the people who run our game had this idea that Aussie Rules would get some traction in the American market or even coax a few Americans to come over an play...never took off...instead we send our big kickers over to your grid iron when they've had enough here

All the end of season games which were played around the world have largely been replaced by the farcical hybrid game they call International Rules, played against Ireland.

Last years Premiers Geelong come back to earth with a thud in Adelaide

ADELAIDE coach Brenton Sanderson has implored his club to remain humble after the Crows demolished reigning AFL premiers Geelong by 50 points on Saturday.

Sanderson praised an "incredible" opening half which laid the platform for Adelaide's thumping home win, 19.8 (122) to 10.12 (72).

Five talking points: Adelaide v Geelong

"That is as good as I have seen these boys play this year," Sanderson said.

"That first half was incredible really."

Adelaide stunned Geelong with an early blitz that led to a match-winning 63-point half-time lead, with the Crows booting 14 goals in the first half.

The Crows were remarkably efficient, scoring 19 times from 26 entries into their attacking 50 metre arc in a devastating opening half.

Adelaide has now won six games in seven rounds to be the league's big improvers in Sanderson's first year as head coach.

The Crows finished 14th last season with just seven wins.

Sanderson, a former Geelong assistant, said the victory was sweet against his former club, but urged the Crows not to get carried away with their early season success.

"We're taking quite a humble approach," Sanderson said in his post-match press conference.

"But the boys do deserve some credit because they're playing some good footy ... but we won't get ahead of ourselves."

Geelong's dismal day was magnified by injuries to Tom Gillies (knee) and Allen Christensen (calf).

Their losses compounded the pre-game withdrawals of stars Jimmy Bartel (ankle) and Matthew Scarlett (thigh) as the Cats slipped to a 4-3 win-loss record.

The Cats have yet to win a contested ball count this season, with Adelaide prevailing 147 to 127 in the key statistic.

"It's a serious problem and we have got to improve it," coach Chris Scott said after the match.

Geelong's vaunted midfield had their colours lowered by Adelaide, who were again inspired by club champion Scott Thompson.

The tenacious Thompson gathered 34 disposals, had 17 clearances and laid seven tackles in a standout display.

He received superb support from midfield colleague Rory Sloane (26 possessions), while Adelaide's forward line again functioned smoothly.

Spearhead Taylor Walker kicked three goals and fellow tall Kurt Tippett kicked two, as did livewires Jared Petrenko and Graham Johncock, who relished being released from his usual defensive post.

The Crows had 13 individual goal-kickers while Geelong had just six, headed by Mitch Duncan's three goals.

RICHMOND'S claims as a genuine finals aspirant have been boosted by a stirring victory against the Sydney Swans at the MCG on Saturday evening.

The Tigers stunned the Swans in the first half, kicking seven goals to two - including five unanswered goals in the opening term - before the visitors fought back bravely in the third.

But Richmond was able to steady in the final term, securing a confidence-boosting victory.

Battle of the newbies goes to this years first year team

HISTORY has been made at Manuka Oval (Canberra), with Greater Western Sydney claiming its first AFL victory in a thrilling 27-point triumph over a stunned Gold Coast outfit.

The Suns were heavy favourites in the battle of the newcomers and led by four points at the final change, but the Giants stormed home with five goals to zero in the fourth quarter to snatch their first win, 13.16 (94) to 9.13 (67).

Five talking points: GWS v Gold Coast

Tipped by many to remain winless throughout their debut season, the Giants had shown signs of competitiveness in recent weeks, but nobody expected the display they produced in Canberra on Saturday afternoon.

Jonathan Giles kicked three goals, including two in the final quarter, while Steve Coniglio had his best game as a Giant with 31 possessions and Chad Cornes was a rock in defence.

Gold Coast skipper Gary Ablett returned from a knee injury to gather 33 disposals, but he was held to just six in the final quarter as GWS roared to victory in a result that will cause waves throughout the League.

Match gallery

Josh Caddy, Sam Iles and Harley Bennell had their moments for the Suns, but they were left in shock at the manner of the Giants' finish to the game.

The Suns' banner at the start of the game read: 'The bigger they are, the harder they fall', but it was Gold Coast who was brought down to earth to remain without a win in its second season.

Just as they did two weeks ago against the Western Bulldogs at the same ground, the Giants made a flying start.

Goals to Devon Smith, Liam Sumner, Coniglio and Callan Ward inside the first 17 minutes, to just two Gold Coast behinds, gave GWS the start it was after.

The Suns only managed one goal for the quarter, although it was some goal, with Ablett and Bennell involved twice from deep in their own half before the latter kicked truly on the run from 35m.

But the Giants kept the ball pinned in Gold Coast's devensive half for most of the opening quarter en route to a 17-point lead at the first change.

GWS kept up the pressure to start the second quarter, but was unable to get reward for its effort, kicking a string of behinds to keep the Suns within reach.

And the visitors made the Giants pay, with the highly-rated Caddy helping them take control of the match.

Six unanswered goals, including four in a six-minute stretch after time-on, allowed Gold Coast to build a 13-point lead at the main break.

GWS then closed the gap to four points leading into the final term before stringing together a scintillating fourth quarter, claiming four AFL points for the first time in its history.

There also used to be coverage of AFL in the UK. Channel 4 showed extensive highlight coverage for a few years in the late 80's early 90's - then, for some unexplained reason, the coverage suddenly stopped.

The main problem for this sport is that it doesn't have proper internationals as say rugby and cricket do. They do have that hybrid game played against Ireland's Gaelic footballers - but I'm lead to believe that no one takes this seriously.

The lack of international recognition is 2nd to the fact the AFL no longer markets the game overseas like it once did

There is no substitute for full matches being relayed

Grand final 2011 replay

Collingwood (Pies) pip Cats (Geelong) in classic

COLLINGWOOD has held off a rampaging Geelong to win the re-match of the 2011 Grand Finalists by 12 points.

The Magpies led all night, but Geelong swung the momentum around in the final quarter before Collingwood rallied to win 14.12 (96) to 11.18 (84).

Five talking points: Collingwood v Geelong

The Cats leveled the scores with less than two minutes remaining, but a contentious umpiring decision to award Alex Fasolo a 50-metre penalty for contact by Josh Hunt after Fasolo marked on the wing returned Collingwood a lead they never relinquished.

Collingwood had a tough ask to retain that lead in the final quarter. Not only was Geelong on the march, but the Magpies had only one interchange rotation available after a hamstring injury to Dane Swan and a quad injury to Ben Reid. The Pies had earlier substituted Alan Didak in the third quarter.

Scott Pendlebury's poise with the ball and ability to find space in heavy traffic was once again evident in his 30 disposals, but he added another dimension to his game with four goals, including the first and last of the game.

Pendlebury's game earned praise from Magpies coach Nathan Buckley for his persistence in what was at times a frustrating night.

"I didn't think he had the game on his terms at any time, which when you see his output, sounds counter-intuitive because his ability to influence the game was massive, especially in that last quarter," Buckley said after the game.

"I really think he had to grind this performance out which is the sign of a very good player."

Steele Sidebottom continued his good recent form with 38 touches, while Swan worked his way into the game after a slow start.

Grand Final rematches are often better spectacles than the previous meetings between sides in September, but for the first three quarters this was an exception to the rule.

Both teams struggled with their disposal and their kicking for goal, with the Cats paying most for their inaccuracy.

Geelong had the run of play for much of the third term but just couldn't convert, booting 1.6 for the quarter. Tom Hawkins exerted his authority with strong leads against opponent Ben Reid, but let himself down when kicking for goal. Hawkins finished with 2.4 on a frustrating night.

Joel Selwood was inspirational for his work around the ground and typically fearless approach to the contest, finishing the match with 36 touches.

Corey Enright gave Geelong plenty of drive off half-back in the first half, while Mathew Stokes was dangerous up forward, kicking three goals including two crucial majors late in the game.

Cats coach Chris Scott admitted his team had its chances to secure the win despite trailing all night.

"I don't think it's fair on the opposition to say that we should have won it, but we were supremely confident in the box and I think the boys were as well," Scott said.

"It just didn't go our way. We lost the crucial contests at the wrong time. But I thought in that last quarter we just dominated. I mean, 23 inside 50s in a quarter of footy is a domination. We had some gilt-edged chances to convert from right in front, and we missed them."

Did Hawthorn just snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?
Anyway, the beer is on Sydney this evening.

Some would say the real Buddy left Hawthorn after the 2008 GF

Buddys 5 goals in the 2nd half pretty much stole victory from Port last week.
who else kicks 70 metre goals off of a few steps.

http://www.afl.com.au/video/2014-06-...-port-adelaide

The Richmond game not quite as good given they were playing the perennial under achievers
http://www.afl.com.au/video/2014-06-...lance-franklin

When you play Richmond its always them that snatch defeat from victory it would seem
6 goals to 2 up double the possessions and then 1 goal in 2 and half quarters.

3 wins in 13 games - they really want that wooden spoon

Sorry buttsie, that was a real slip of mine.

What I meant to say was, did Richmond just snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Friday night's (20/6/14) game against Sydney? Listening to it (can't abide the TV) sounded like they were about to cause a real upset.

An easy slip to make given the honest foot in mouth comments by Jack Riewoldt

says Richmond tried to copy Hawthorn’s game plan

The out-of-form Coleman medallist was brought sharply into line by coach Damien Hardwick on Thursday morning for suggesting the Tigers had tried and failed to replicate the game plan of premiers Hawthorn.

"We caught up with him this morning and removed his foot from his mouth and my foot from his arse," Hardwick said.
