The Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers are to cease print editions in March, leaving only an online edition, the owner has said. Announcing the "digital-only" move, ESI Media said "some redundancies among editorial employees" would be made. But it said there would also be 25 new "digital-content roles". ESI has also confirmed it will sell its sister title, i newspaper, to Johnston Press, for an expected £24m, subject to approval from Johnston's shareholders. Evgeny Lebedev, ESI's owner, said: "This decision preserves the Independent brand and allows us to continue to invest in the high-quality editorial content that is attracting more and more readers to our online platforms." The last print edition of the Independent will be published on Saturday 26 March, while the last Independent on Sunday will be on 20 March.

I'm hoping that with all those reporters, editors, and other paper people in need of a job, some of them would be willing to relocate to Birmingham at a push. God knows our local rag, the (infamous?; sic) Birmingham Mail is in desperate need of some new staff who can spell, use proper grammar, and spot all the glaring errors occurring in the paper that even a four year old child could spot. If you think the media bods who confused Lenny Henry with Ainsley Harriott were bad, you should read the B'ham Mail once in a while...

Memories... He was a great guy, archetype of the rough and obscur defender for all football lovers. At the time Bulgaria had Hristo Stoichkov et Emil Kostadinov, most famous, in the team. His nickname was the "Bulgarian wolf".
On more his unusual forname "Trifon" means a lot for all francophone & fans of the comics "Tintin", as it's too the forname of the famous Professeur Tournesol :

At the 1994 World Cup in the USA, Trifon Ivanov was elected "the ugliest player" of the competition. He deserved much more. RIP.

He was a legend for someone like me who grew up with football in the 1990s for three reasons: he looked like a werewolf

, he was a great player and he played for Rapid Vienna. Later as my interest in football declined, I lost trace of Ivanov. Some sources say he was facing health issues due to his alcoholism. He died from a heart attack. R.I.P.
