An American MPAA "X" rating doesn't mean there was explicit or actual sex. The new film Blue Valentine has received a NC-17 (current version of "X") and from what I've heard while there are bedroom scenes they aren't that explicit, just very frequent, and the nudity wasn't the only reason for the NC-17 rating.

I think the movie "Bolero" in the USA was then a scandal in commercial cinema for the abundance of nudity and erotic positions with no evidence of pornography; however, was ranked with the X degree, in 1984, to consider an absurd pornographic content. Keep in mind the historical moment and it would be helpful to review the newspaper archives. Of course, those were different times ... then, in doubt between erotic and pornographic, X.

"Bolero" was released with no MPAA rating; its nudity and sexual content disqualified it from an "R" rating. At the time of release the NC-17 rating had not yet been established and the only higher rating being X, John Derek decided to release the film unrated. The film's tagline is "An adventure in ecstasy." The movie is officially on DVD with an "R" rating with no cuts."

as i recall, the mainstream movie 'blindfold:acts of obsession', starring ex bev hills 90210 babe shannen doherty also attained the undesired NC-17 rating in its uncut form... and that only showed her boobs, bum, and some light fetish sex.... no pubic area of penetration at all.. so that rating must, as the above poster suggested, just cover sexual themes, and or a certain amount of other nudity.

although we just had the 18 rating here in uk, but i recall this one clearly.

Yes, speaking of the NC-17 rating, I have seen a few and the only one that had obvious penetration was the documentry on the 1972 movie, "Deep Throat." In 2008 a documentry called "Inside Deep Throat 2005" aired on HBO. It showed Linda Lovelace deep throating Harry Reems. It was quite shocking to see on HBO. I loved it.
