Two great movies shown on consecutive days on daytime TV.
In 1999 The BFI voted The Third Man as the greatest British movie of all time. Ice Cold in Alex was a prize winner at the Berlin Film Festival. |

Just watched "Highwaymen" Starring Kevin Costner & Woody Harrelson as two retired Texas Rangers brought out of retirement to hunt down Bonnie & Clyde, a bit slow in places but catches the mood perfectly. Doesn´t in any way glorify the Barrow gang, but focuses on the near impossible hunt to bring them to justice. Excellent acting by the two aging stars, well worth a look.

Ringu. A really scary Japanese horror film. The much inferior The Ring was the American remake.

Apollo 11
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8760684...2?ref_=nv_sr_2 A documentary with amazing new and restored footage, no narration just the TV commentary and NASA personnel as it was happening, when you see the Saturn V engines blast off in close up, you think they must be mad |

Just finished watching something called Journey Back to Christmas (2016).
Not very good. At least it was cheaply made so minimal resources were wasted. The premise is that Hanna, a pretty nurse from somewhere in Norman Rockwell winterland America falls and bangs her head during a blizzard on Christmas Eve 1945 and as a comet is passing. Somehow she wakes up a few days before Christmas in 2016 and the same comet will be passing again shortly. Hanna has to cope with a variety of difficult problems, starting from mere survival, but including cultural disorientation; being a total stranger in what is still recognisable as her own home town (the Rip van Winkle problem); being newly informed that her soldier husband died in WW2 and now robbed of the people who could have emotionally supported her; trying to avoid punitive action from the 2016 authorities; trying to stay sane; trying to work out if and how she can return to where she belongs. It actually has promise as a story but is very poorly done, a lazy script with little thought given to explaining what happens and how it happens, who the people are (except Hanna, who is not badly drawn and is a part well enough acted by someone called Candace Cameron Bure); why things happen and what the point is. The details are wrong, for example Nurse Hanna's lack of reaction, not even polite reaction, when she has to deal in 2016 with black characters in positions of personal authority over her, such as the doctor and the police chief. Even a liberal and educated young woman from 1945 America would have been tested by that. That situation could have been used in a better script as a point of character growth. Hanna's car should have an A sticker in the windscreen to inform her petrol station that she is only entitled to 4 gallons a week. We see Nurse Hanna working as a nurse in 1945 but we don't see her showing medical knowledge, even out of date medical knowledge, in 2016. The main point of waste? The performance of Candace Cameron Bure is good enough to suggest she could have supported a much better film had she been given the chance. Also, (just a personal opinion) she looks rather spiffing in vintage 1940s plumage, though clearly thirty-something rather than twenty-something which the story would imply ought to be her age as a recently married nurse not yet starting a family. One of the nicest things in the film is the last scene, only about 30 seconds long, when Nurse Hanna has been returned to 1945, is forlornly trying to dig her family's 1941 Hudson coupe out of a snowdrift with a broken tree branch, and her handsome MIA husband turned out to be alive and well in a US Army PFC uniform with one stripe, startling her with the dry and laconic line: Quote:
What a shame this wasn't that film. 3.5/10 and most of that because I enjoyed looking at Candace Cameron Bure and thought she was decidely cute.

A Walk Amongst The Tombstones 2014 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365907/ Liam Neeson lends His bleak features to an above action crime thriller. This time it's not personal,Neeson plays Matthew Scuddder,Ex Cop turned unlicensed Private Eye seeking the sadistic killers of a Drug Dealers wife. The movie eschews slam bang action for slow burning tension and a methodical plotline.
