It's a 237km (147mi) course with three climbs (in a circuit) in the last half of the race on Canoas/Vista Chinesa (530m - 1730 ft) starting the climb from sea level. Average gradient is 9% but parts are as much as 17.8%. That's a bit much for Sagan while racing against other top racers. The women are doing the same course but only one circuit over Canoas/Vista Chinesa. I can't find anything on the MTB course. He's been mostly out of MTB racing for a while. I kind of doubt he can win but maybe he can get on the podium. |

Looking at the start list and the profile, if I was a betting man, I'd probably bet on Froome.
http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/...ce-start-list/ It's going to be someone who's a strong climber, regardless. Valverde. Porte. Nibali. Alaphilippe. Costa. Majka. Bardet? I'd love to see Taylor Phinney do it and if it was only one circuit for that climb, he might even have had a chance to make up time on the descent (he's a fantastic descender) but I don't see it after three. The first time up that climb is going to sort a lot of riders out and the third is going to sort almost everyone else out. Only the strongest climbers will be left after 3. |

Maybe one of these:
Dan Martin Geraint Thomas Simon Geschke Tanel Kangert Zdenek Stybar Jarlinson Pantano very impressive in TDF Richie Porte My main bets are Steven Kruijswijk he did not ride in TDF, and,if he can come up over the last climb in the top group, Andrey Amador Amador showed us in the Giro D'Italia what a brilliant downhill racer he is. |

My word,what a fantastic race.
Bad luck for Nibali,Heinao and Thomas, but that´s the name of the game. Van Avermaet Fuglsang Majka Great medalists Entertainment at the top level More to come tomorrow in the ladies race, and then the timetrials. Last edited by the flu; August 6th, 2016 at 07:20 PM.. |

Greg van Avermaert won the god medal in cycling. Since he's 30, he won several great courses. What a rider!
Sadly, for the French I am, Julian Alaphilippe did some mistakes and I hope in the future he will be able to win races like the Belgian. |

Van Vleuten's crash was horrific, though thankfully she will be OK despite suffering 3 broken vertebrae and concussion. That road with a trench each side was far too dangerous for such a descent and the organisers were lucky no-one was killed.
Here's an alternative video of it, if you really want to see it again. Just horrible! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyxgToqzKR0 |

Some smallish but still a bit nasty climbs made the time trial a bit less predictable.
Cancellara had one more ITT win left in his legs. Getting an Olympic gold in one's final season of racing has to feel good. Dumoulin and Froome are no surprise but some of the gaps back are. Tony Martin was 3:18 back? Wow. Taylor Phinney was 5:10 back?! |

Brilliant that Spartacus had one more great ride left in him. Flanders and Roubaix won't be the same without him next year.
