I don't live a million miles from Sandringham and have seen a few of the Royals out and about over the years. One day, some time ago, I came across a parked Range Rover on the side of the road in a wooded area with an older woman walking a couple of dogs, followed by a much younger man. I remarked at the time that this person would make a perfect double for the Queen, not realising who I had actually seen. It was just not something you would expect to normally come across. Phillip has a local reputation for blasting around and is clearly past his best days and needs to be stopped from using any public highways. For what possible reason does he need to drive himself?

Anyway, the local council's brilliant answer to this elderly clown's behaviour is apparently to introduced speed reductions and average speed cameras on the stretch of road where the accident happened. I'd suggest they simply put up new road signs telling drivers to watch out for dangerous elderly idiots turning out of side roads without bothering to look for oncoming traffic.

Mr. Baxter got the "voice" to match Mr. Wells' original book quite well I think and has expanded the War of the Worlds universe consistent with what Wells wrote. I read this book over the Christmas period and have been meaning to say something about it for the past couple of weeks. Generally, I thought this was a well constructed and nicely researched novel. It fitted in very well with the original story and presented some very good ideas and suggestions. If I was going to be a bit picky, I think I'd like to have seen the first part of the book to be a little less casual about the attack and generally more horrific. At times, I felt that Stephen Baxter was writing for an Edwardian readership as opposed to a modern audience. However, things improve as the lead character goes into the alien occupied zone.

Some of the ideas were good. I still think the biggest fault with the original story, seen from a modern perspective was the cannon launched spacecraft and Baxter did try to address this. The heat ray weapons were well described and some relatively modern technology was developed by Thomas Edison for the story and fitted in well.

This is good quality sci-fi and it developed a number of ideas well. I just wish authors would produce shorter novels, with this being about 450 pages long. Still, that's only my opinion and many people are happy with a massive novel to get stuck into.
